A Must Read

This is an excellent introduction to the breadth and depth of Black Studies. Karenga treats the subject with great care and the details of a scholar. He provides a great bibliography to help the reader locate the views and ideas of others. This book is also great for classroom use. Students love it. You will grow with this book. It is well written and easy to follow. He systematically builds each chapter for the reader. It is a classic and a must read for anyone who is remotely interested in Black Studies. I highly recommend it!

I.B.S.:An Excellent Analysis of Black History & Culture

The Introduction to Black Studies by Dr. Maulana Karenga is an invaluable contribution to history and humanity in terms of its afrocentric context in analyzing and accurately introducing the rich and varied history and contribution of continental Africans, African Americans and other Black peoples through out the World African Community to its readers. This book is a must read not only for those in college classes, it should also be used in high school curriculums, Rites of Passage programs and adults alike. I have yet to find another introductory text that gives such a comprehensive analysis of Black life in dignity affirming terms than the I.B.S. The structure in which the I.B.S. is presented to its reader provides for smooth transitions from one category or subject to another. Dr. Karenga appears to order the table of contents in the order of the seven basics areas of culture, i.e. Spirituality and Ethics, History, Social organization, Economic organization, Political organization, Creative Production and Ethos. The origin of this cultural structure is developed from the Communitarian African Philosophy, Kawaida, which means, "Tradition and Reason" also created by Dr. Karenga. More on Kawaida Philosophy can be found on page 173 of the I.B.S. The reader of the I.B.S. will also discover that Dr. Karenga uses category's that provides a logic of liberation in suggesting alternatives to the dominant society's views and values, in how they relate to the views and values of African Americans and other Black peoples. After each subject, Dr. Karenga has provided the reader with study questions and an extensive reference list from which further research and study can take place. Again, I highly recommend the reading of the Introduction to Black Studies and keeping it in one's personnal library as a major reference source.

What you get from this book, will depend on what level you are on.

An Introduction to Black Studies is an excellent book for all those interested in understanding African and African American history. No book can capture the total history of a people, but Karenga does give you an exceptional look at a wide variety of historical and cultural components. This is a "text" book. It is not a novel. This is not the book that you read for pleasure. It is for information. I used this same edition in my I.B.S. class and it changed my life. I actually was looking for a later edition when I saw the reviews. I couldn't believe what people were saying about the book so I was forced to write something. I always have highly recommended this book as a must have to a person who is interested in African Studies. And I will do it again here...you should buy this book.

I always feel a kind of alchemy at work when a batch of homemade soap is being made, a process that is at once deeply primitive and highly elegant. Unlike commercial soaps of today, a bar of handcrafted soap seems to have a character and richness of its own, and from the strange and streaked concoction my first landlady grated into her washtub to the herbal bar I washed with this morning, handmade soap has never failed to excite me.

Soapmaking cannot help but appeal to one's sense of frugality -- one can make a year's supply of fine quality bars for pennies each -- but beyond the economics, this is a folk art that makes ecological sense. Handmade soap contains nothing you do not add yourself, and the multiple additives that now find their way into both bathing and laundry soaps can happily be avoided.

My own interest in pure homemade soaps eventually led to the formation of a small country soap-making business, which in turn led me deeper into the history and lore of soap and which, finally, helped spawn this book ...

It is my hope that this book will move others to take up the art that has been largely lost, and in the process discover the unique pleasures of handmade soap.

A good usable book for the novice and experienced soapmaker.

Upon arrival I immediately read the book cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed myself. This was the third soapmaking book I had purchased and found, that as with the others, the author had her own way of soapmaking. By taking information from all the books I had purchased along with borrowed books from my public library, I was finally able to make soap. I have found in my experiences that no one book is complete in itself, however this book is filled with valuable information and is a must for your soapmaking library.

An American disabuses himself of some culinary prejudice

I was sitting in a bar one night reading a copy of Jane Garmey's Great British Cooking (another very good book) when a woman of obvious British extraction came up to me and asked, "Is there really any Great British Cooking?" An interesting question, I thought... Ms. Garmey actually did a pretty good job of making it clear that there was. This book goes much further, though, and should I think be required reading for anyone who wants to know what British food is really all about. (Note: I've not been to the UK, though I'd like to. But I figure the BBC's poll results are about as close as I can get for the time being.)
First off, it's an excellent deal -- the US price of $$$$ is only a dollar or so more than the UKP12.99 cover price. It's a fairly typical British television cookbook, impeccably laid out with near-pornographic food shots and a mouthwatering cover picture of the iconic British quickie dinner, fish and chips, newspaper and all. It's a slim book, with just over a hundred recipes divided into ten categories, including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Convenience, Outdoor, Party, Comfort, Tea, Festive, and even Food of Love (chocolate gets heavy play here). The book revels in its demographic data, showing differences between male and female tastes as well as regional flavors.

Surprises abound. The convenience food chapter is utterly dominated by Indian and Chinese dishes, as might be expected, but Fish and Chips is the #1. American favorites like doughnuts (said to be a teatime favorite in Wales), brownies, and chili (percieved as a Mexican dish) appear all over the book as well. Scones and clotted cream are tops in the tea category, but some old standbys like steak and kidney pie don't even rate in the top ten of the dinner category. The surprise favorite dinner: Spaghetti Bolognese, an oddity that perhaps reflects the more cosmopolitan tastes of a wired voter base.

The recipes are by and large hip updates to tradition; the scones have a twist of lemon zest, while the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding includes a red wine gravy (a favorite in my house for a few years) and mustard-and-thyme Yorkies. A hamburger recipe transforms the humble burger into lavash-wrapped kofta patties. Bangers and mash gets a hard cider and leek gravy. (A special word must be set aside for the rather uncategorizable (and probably indigestible) "Sausage, Bean, and Egg Bake with Oven-Baked Chips", a peculiar perversion of the classic English breakfast presented primarily as a hangover cure. Your guess is as good as mine as to exactly what that word is.)

This is a book that reveals a culture that may have perhaps gone a bit over the edge with food, but has definitely come to terms with and thoroughly overcome its reputation as a culinary wasteland. To read this book is to see a Great Britain that has learned how to eat, and how to appreciate the blessings of a multicultural heritage at the table (if, perhaps, not in other ways just yet). It's not perfect -- food writer Nigel Slater, author of the foreword, expresses skepticism at some of the outcomes of the poll, which I believe can be explained by the Internet-centered nature of the poll. However, though it's a tough book to find in the US, but it's not an expensive one, and very much worth the trouble to order.

About the Author
Dr. Steve Albrecht is internationally known for his work on workplace violence prevention, and manages a training and consulting firm specializing in high-risk human resources issues, organizational security concerns, and work culture improvement. His many books include Tough Training Topics, Service! Service! Service!, Added Value Negotiating, Ticking Bombs: Defusing Violence in the Workplace (written in 1994 as one of the first books on this subject), and Fear and Violence on the Job. A retired San Diego Police reserve sergeant, he holds a doctorate in business administration, an MA in security management, a BS in psychology, and a BA in English. He is board certified in human resources, security, and employee coaching.

common sense reminders for library staff

This short book is recommended reading for anyone who works in a library visited by the public. The author, a former cop, knows his stuff.
I did not agree with everything he had to say ("You thought this job was about the great books, history on the page, and having the time to review the periodicals and publications that interest you" (p. 1) - uh, no, I didn't) but he said a lot that made sense ("while we can't control people's behaviors, we can control our perception of them, our responses to them, and, ultimately, our treatment of them" (p. 5)).

He acknowledges that every library and situation is different and that many factors come into play. He says things like "There is no perfect answer for whether you should or should not talk to a patron" (p. 8) and encourages you to trust yourself and your instincts. He stresses being “firm, fair, consistent, and assertive,” which is a good checklist to live and work by. He reminds us to ask, "Am I being reasonable in response to this patron's behavior?" He notes, "You can turn a cooperative person into a screaming maniac by being condescending, rude, or officious with him or her." (p. 11)

This book is filled with lots of good common sense reminders. It also contains practical advice and a library employee security survey to help directors get a handle on security in their libraries. It would make a good discussion book for library staff. I’m glad I read it.

Essential Text

Rudolph Steiner. What does one say? After all these years of reading him - over thirty - a mix. There are pages and pages of unverifiable speculation of the most determinate sort. Steiner says nothing without an intimation of finality, however wild it may seem to the uninitiated. He does not merely write or speak. He pronounces. And this series of Pax Europa lectures, among his very best, in my opinion, is no exception to what is the rule with this extraordinary and truly inimitable figure. As the late Clifford Geertz noted: "He who would know. . . must first believe". But set among much that is difficult to accept, within the current limitations of the bounds of sense, are insights of the truest sort, those expressions of fuller existential meaning that reach deep into the soul. These are bridged by Steiner's celebrated logical consistency.
The lectures here provide a close analysis of Revelations: the record of the War of All Against All, which, in my opinion we have already begun to engage. The book seems to illumine this state of affairs.
