Not such a "light" book

The author went into too much detail about Holly's tense relationship with her mom and sister, and also too much with the addiction stuff. Mostly, I found Holly to be whiney and annoying. The "hero" wasn't all that interesting either.

This story was neither uplifting, nor intriguing. I hadn't ever read anything by Julia London until this book, and I really wanted to like it, but in the end I couldn't. To me, a story should be interesting, or uplifting, or should teach you something. This book failed on all three counts.

Great Love Story + Family Drama Story

What I Can Tell You:
Have there ever been two sisters more different? Hannah has always been her mother's favorite, especially at the end. She took her mother to her doctor appointments, made funeral arrangements and always did the right thing according to mom. Then there is Holly who plays guitar, never had time to visit mom, struggles as a song writer and works part time to pay the rent. So it was quite a surprise when Holly was given the "homestead" in her mother's will.

Holly's life is suddenly altered when Hannah knocks on Holly's door, hands her son Mason over to her and says she has to leave but will be back. Holly finds herself instant mom to her nephew and unsure where her sister is or how to take care of a baby.

She heads home to the homestead and meets cowboy Wyatt Clark a weekened father of a little girl. Can Holly be an instant mother? Will Hannah come back? What of Mason's father? Can Holly and Wyatt find their way to each other in the midst of family conflict? All will be revealed my friend.

What I loved about this book is how real the sister's relationship is. As a sister of two I know how very different siblings can be. Do we really know our family as well as we think we do? I also appreciated how Holly handled the "add water instant mother" spin of the book.

The story moves nicely and other than one character, I liked them all. I walked away with two thoughts; What would you do for family? AND You can love children with your whole heart even if you didn't give birth to them.

When Love Transcends Earth

I just finished reading Gather the Children which draws not only on a sensitive writer's soul and her experiences with rural living, but is also beautifully woven with the utmost in creativity and imaginative language. The story unfolds like a poem devoted to the American West but yes, that's a spaceship on the cover. Mari introduces us to wild, fighting and shoot-em-up cowboys living in 1865 Texas. Like a scene right out of an old western movie, our hero MacDonald confronts a scraggly teenager by the name of Lorenz. You'll learn to love MacDonald and his no nonsense way of solving problems that arise from the brutal conditions Mari describes so eloquently.

"Before the corals of the morning sunrise had dissipated they spotted the herd of mustangs. MacDonald used his powerful Zark to cut off the stallion while the rest bunched the remnants of the herd, and then drove them towards the spring and corral, not worrying if they lost a mare or two."

I loved the above section for the way Mari used the words coral and corrals in adjacent sentences. It reminded me of the way she describes the sunrise where she now lives. Zark is a horse by the way, and you can imagine the contrast of one powerful horse driving hundreds of others to a spring on a sunny day.

The writing uses western drawls interspersed with Germanic phrases and accents that make it a tad difficult to read but worth every page. You'll be hooked into the story so much, that you'll want to find out just where these folks come from and you'll get glimpses into family roots that don't just begin on other continents but in another world.

When Lorenz asks MacDonald, why he doesn't return to Thalia, a planet overrun by Justines and Krepyons his response is:
"Because I have found my true love on this world, and we have a wee lassie, and now a laddie to raise."

In other words, love binds everything together in Gather the Children. Family and love run like a rocky and turbulent river, and the paranormal foundations for a sequel and prequel are well established in this amazing novel. You'll want to know more about this great man MacDonald and where he came from. Will he go home or does love make him choose to stay here on Earth forever?

Very pleasantly surprised!

I read this book on recommendation from a friend. Let me start by saying I typically don't read "sci-fi" type books and was skeptical. However, within minutes I was intrigued enough to continue on. The characters were very well developed and easy to relate to. I felt like I was right there with them. I began to really enjoy the author's descriptive and thorough writing style. The different dialects made it a very interesting and realistic read. I love the mix of old west and sci fi and what can I say?....I really really enjoyed it! I can't say I've read anything else quite like it. I just kept turning pages because I truly wanted to know what was going to happen next and how it was going to end. If you are looking for something unique that is interesting and easy and fun to read, give this a try. I look forward to future writings from this author.

Gather the Children! Brilliantly and imaginatively written.

I have waisted several hours on Sci-Fi novels that were just copy cats of another. Well not this one. The author put her heart and soul and a life-time of thought into this masterpiece. I love this book and I have never said those words before about any novel. I could feel the pain of the charactors as their frustration and determination rode their course throughout the story. I have never experienced a story quite like this one and will read it again. I highly recommend this to everyone that is hungry and searching for a Sci-Fi story that they can actually relate to. Cannot wait for her next novel. Enjoy.

The Mahabharata you never knew

A brilliant work. Probably Bhyrappa's best work. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that this is one of the all time best novels of Kannada. The epic Mahabharata is retold giving it an unbelievably realistic touch and completely removing the mythical element. This novel changed my very perspective of the whole story of Mahabharata, the characters and of course the battle of Kurukshetra. Thank you, Bhyrappa.

This book presents one of the great epics of Indian Culture "The Mahabharatha" in a radical perspective. I have read other interpretive versions of Mahabharatha and related mythology, but nothing comes as close to a feasible, realistic explanation as Parva. The extensive research undertaken by the author to gather geographical and socialogical facts has shown itself in the development and reasoning of the story. This is Mahabharatha retold, just brilliant

This is one of Bhairappa very well known novels. This changed my very imaginations of Mahabhartha, only for better. There are very few works today of this calibre. You will find great insight, consciousness and honesty in this book, which narrates Mahabharatha as though it is happening in front of your eyes. Its philosophical depth, reason and power can blow you off. I am proud to have come across this book and a writer of Bhairappa's quality.

Costly but it may save you

The subtitle of this book is "A Philosophical Introduction". This is however a very well argued and well written book that seeks to address both sides of the main arguments concerning the existence of God. It is for the advanced scholar. It is not appropriate as an introduction to the subject of the existence of God. However, if one welcomes the challenge of a thorough exposition, this is a good book to read. The only segment that readers without formal training in logic might have difficulty is from pages 112 to 115 (but one can skip those pages and still enjoy the book).

The book discusses the three main arguments concerning the existence of "God" - (a) the ontological argument, which is a metaphysical inquiry into the nature of God; (b) the Design argument, which is essentially the argument whether a design can exist without a designer; and (c) the cosmological argument, which is an inquiry into what was the first cause of the universe. Nagasawa does not provide a categorical statement as to the conclusion in each argument (and the many sub-arguments), but he says that if any of the arguments for the existence of God is sound then it follows that God exists and that would be a great discovery. Indeed, he says: "It would probably be the greatest discovery in human history." Conversely, if the arguments against the existence of God are sound, then God does not exist, and that would be an equally great discovery. He leaves the reader to decide which is which. He anticipates the possibility that none of the arguments is sound. In which event, knowing why it fails is a scholarly step to learning more.

The author pointed out that the argument from Design appears to be a contemporary hot topic, but in fact, it is the weakest of the three defences of the existence of God.

The Best Yet

Seldom do you come across a book that delivers on its promises as much as Yujin Nagasawa's The Existence of God. In four clearly written chapters Nagasawa deftly lays out the three traditional arguments for the existence of God.

Part 1 deals with the Ontological argument in its various incarnations, from Anselm to Godol. Part 2 handles evolution verses intelligent design, showing the relative absurdity of modern intelligent design arguments. Part 3 shows the cosmological argument, its relation to the Big Bang Theory, and current work with infinity and the so-called Kalam cosmological argument. Part 4 deals with scraps of theories, like Pascal's Wager, and some of the moral arguments for God's existence.

All in all, this is the best introductory book I have read on natural theology. Concise yet boldly explanatory, detailed without getting bogged down in them, Nagasawa provides a work that his perfect for the intelligent seeker looking to understand how the mind can grope toward an understanding of God's existence without recourse to faith or mysticism.

About the Author
Daniel M. Hausman is Herbert A. Simon Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author or editor of seven books, including Causal Asymmetries (1998), Essays on Philosophy and Economic Methodology (1992), The Separate and Inexact Science of Economics (1992), both editions of The Philosophy of Economics: An Anthology (1984, 1994), and the first edition of Economic Analysis and Moral Philosophy (Cambridge Surveys in Economic Literature, 1996, with Michael McPherson), all published by Cambridge University Press. Professor Hausman has worked on issues concerning ethics and economics, foundational questions concerning the nature of rationality, economic methodology, and causation. He is currently investigating questions concerning the relations between health, welfare, and preferences.

Michael McPherson, President of the Spencer Foundation in Chicago, Illinois, is past President of Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota, and served as Dean of Faculty and Professor of Economics at Williams College. He has been a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Jointly with Daniel M. Hausman he founded and edited the Cambridge University Press journal Economics and Philosophy. Dr. McPherson is co-author of five books. Short on argument...

I decided to use parts of this book for an undergraduate course that examines social issues from both a philosophical and economic perspective. For those teaching courses similar to mine, I'd suggest using this book only as a supplement. As a philosopher, I was particularly disappointed with the lack of rigorous argumentation in the book. The chapters tend to be structured as, "Economists typically do X. However, X involves takes many philosophical ideas Y for granted. Here is Y, and here are some alternatives to Y." Pedagogically, I would have liked to have seen deeper discussion as to the arguments for and against Y and its alternatives. Right now, the book requires its readers to do a lot of work to figure out: (a) why the differences between rival conceptions of welfare, liberty, equality, and justice really matter, and (b) the relative strengths and weaknesses of these rival conceptions. All this being said, this book might work better for economists trying to get their feet wet in social and political philosophy than for philosophers trying to do the opposite.
