Great Text for Undergraduate Course on Revelation

In my blurb for this book in 2014, I commented that I would be using this text the next time I taught Revelation. Indeed, I taught the course for the third time to a group of 26 undergraduate juniors and seniors this past fall 2015. In the first two iterations, I had a difficult time finding just the right text for the course since most of my students come from an evangelical background highly influenced by a dispensational premillennial approach to Revelation. At the least I desire my students to have a broader understanding of the historical background and the literary milieu (OT, NT, extra-biblical apocalypses) as a basis for understanding the symbolism in Revelation as well as to see Revelation as a further expression of the Christian gospel for those in persecution. Stevens' book hit the mark for me. It was readable and informative for my undergraduate audience with an easy-going, even entertaining writing style. Steven's "apology" for a more symbolical approach over against the prevailing view among many evangelicals was very helpful, as well as the many graphic representations of the structure of Revelation. After having used it, I will definitely use it again. It can easily serve as a main text, though it is perhaps better used in conjunction with a standard commentary on Revelation along with some supplementary articles on various specialty aspects such as John's use of the OT. I also have students read a number of selections from extra-biblical apocalypses. This book is not meant as a monograph for scholars, but as a useful text for students, though the bibliography is certainly broad and deep enough to point students to additional resources. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Book, unique and well written.

Wonderful book on Revelation. Stevens works from a historical frame and provides connections from the historical cities and the island of Patmos that enlighten the reader of Revelation to John's intent. There are several photos and maps that help the reader understand what the original audience of Revelation would have understood, as well as work from the eschatological factors in the Gospel of Mark. While this isn't a line-by-line critical commentary, this text does offer commentary on larger concepts of Revelation and provides background that most commentaries do not address. This is a great resource to use along side critical commentaries in studying Revelation. In asking the question of where does Stevens fall, he is an exception to the usual camps. He clearly states in the Book that he is Passion-Millennial, that the Passion of Christ predicts the Passion of the Church. As a student, this book helped me to see the beauty in the text of Revelation and has helped me read Revelation in a way that not only helps me teach and preach, but deepens my faith as I read the book of Revelation.

Excellent exploration of the Book of Revelation and wonderful aid to proper interpretation. Very good survey of the history of how this book has been understood by the church. Dr. Stevens shows how the imagery in the biblical text connects to the world Christians in the seven churches were living in and how we should understand those images in contrast to Roman culture. Well worth it. It will challenge what you think you know about Revelation.

David Colander has been the Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Economics at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont since 1982. He previously taught at Columbia University, Vassar College, and the University of Miami. Professor Colander has authored, co-authored, or edited more than 35 books and 100 articles on a wide range of topics. His books have been, or are being, translated into a number of different languages, including Chinese, Bulgarian, Polish, Italian, and Spanish. He is a former President of both the Eastern Economic Association and History of Economics Society and is, or has been, on the editorial boards of the Journal of the History of Economic Thought, Journal of Economic Methodology, Eastern Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Education, The Journal of Socioeconomics, and Journal of Economic Perspectives. He has also been a consultant to Time-Life Films, the U.S. Congress, a Brookings Policy Fellow, and a Visiting Scholar at Nuffield College, Oxford. In 2001 2002 he was the Kelly Professor of Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University.

About the Author
Dr. Ibrahim has a BSc (EE) degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo, M Eng and PhD degrees from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (APEO), the American Association of Engineering Education (ASEE), and the Material Research Society (MRS). Dr. Ibrahim has lectured widely in the area of electronics on three continents for a diverse population of students and presented seminars and workshops for practicing engineers. He has a wide range of research and tutorial publications. Dr. Ibrahim has chaired numerous technical sessions in several conferences and organized and co-chaired the sessions on Current Trends in Electronics Education during IECON’01. He is the author of Introduction to Applied Fuzzy Electronics and a contributor to the multimedia CD-ROM that accompanies the Canadian edition of Boylestad’s Circuit Analysis, both published by Prentice-Hall. He recently wrote an article titled “Bringing Fuzzy Logic into Focus: An introductory overview of fuzzy electronics” published in the September 2001 issue of IEEE Circuits and Devices magazine.

Very misleading title

The book covers a lot of topics, of which one is fuzzy logic. If your aim is to implement a fuzzy controller in an embedded system, this book will not help you. It does not cover enough theory to be interesting if you want to really understand fuzzy systems, and it is not practical enough to allow you to make a fuzzy system without understanding the theory.
The book also talks about neural networks, in the same style. Not enough math for the theory savvy and not enough practical information for the "want to play with it" types.
In addition, the book often goes on tangents that are of minimal interest for most embedded system designers. If you want to learn how a fuzzy system controls your washing machine or your camera's autofocus (typical embedded fuzzy applications) it is very little use for you to learn about different current mirror circuits used in analog integrated circuit design or how to use the multi-collector bipolar transistor topology to design a current driven fuzzy AND gate on a VLSI chip.

This book is good if you want to grasp the concepts related to fuzzy logic and neural networks, and are keen on reading all sorts of interesting tidbits of related technology. On the other hand, it is pretty useless if you want to learn what the title suggests, that is, how to use and/or implement fuzzy logic in embedded system applications.

On the positive side, the book contains huge amounts of references and pointers to sites and papers where you can actually find information about fuzzy logic for embedded system applications.

Too much padding, too many typos

While this book does provide a reasonable overview, I found it rather disappointing.

It has too many errors. With highly technical material, it is imperative that the information is correct or else you can't trust it. For example a minus instead of a plus does not help when explaining terminology.

Only half the book is really about fuzzy logic. There is far too much padding eg. 1.large diagrams showing Moore's Law and the layers in an IC gate. These are not subjects that should be covered in a book on fuzzy logic and one is forced to conclude that the author had a page quota to be reached and did it by adding these secions and large verbose reference sections.

A worked example or an appendix showing an algorithm in C would have been far more useful.

Misleading Title

"A First Look at Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks..." might be a lot more accurate. It does a good job of covering the concepts. What it doesn't do is address any of the issues of implementing a fuzzy system in an embedded environment. If you don't know what a fuzzy set is then you should consider this book. If you want some tips or ideas for creating an inference engine for an 8 or 16 bit processor I suggest you look elsewhere.

Incredible!

Ok ladies, everything in this book is correct. It works. EXTREMELY WELL! I was stumbling along, doubting and feeling like it couldn't work. My situation seemed hopeless. But I remained faithful to the process in the book and suddenly BAM.. my man came back into my life and repeated what I had visualised! Lanie was even there to soothe my doubts. This is a wonderful and empowering book. Do yourself the biggest favour of your life and read it now.

Now I know that a lot of people are gonna be skeptics about this and I have read the "It's not a page turner" reviews (Something does not have to be complicated to work, as a matter of fact this is really simple and let me tell you!!!) I bought this book and the Make him Burn only for you book, read them both in one sitting and IMMEDIATELY started working on my best friend and lover of 10 years, we are the closest of friends have AMAZING sex together and he has never once asked me to be exclusive with him even though he knows I have been in love with him from the beginning of our friendship. So about a week ago, we had a really bad argument, an ex girlfriend who had put him through the ringer showed up on his doorstep unannounced, I have been staying with him at his place while I look for a new apt, This girl is the DEVIL incarnate, he told her to leave and that he never wanted to see her at his home again, then left the apt a few minutes after she had left and I thought, he had followed her, so when he came back to the house I let him have it with both barrels, Needless to say, he said he had not followed her and could not believe I would think he did, anyway, he slept on the couch for 2 days (he usually sleeps in his bed with me) I read the books right after that fight and started doing the technique, 2 days and nights, I did it whenever it crossed my mind to do it, at one point I was thinking "This is not working" but I kept doing it and doing it....way more than the book even recommends, I am thinking....It's gonna take forever...Then I was thinking....It's not going to work.....Well today we have spent the entire day talking, making love, communication like never before and have decided that we are going to be exclusive and not only that...we are going to get a place together instead of me just finding a place of my own. 10 years...I wanted to write it 10 Yeeeeeeaaaaaarrrrrsss. 2 days of using this technique and everything I have ever wanted from this beautiful man and friend is mine. Be a skeptic if you want to , but I promise you that the above story is true, never emailed or corresponded with her in anyway, but I will after this. This is an honest open real review by an actual customer. What I have written here is TRUE in every detail and has not been embellished in anyway, I even found out that purchasing this book caused me to over draw my account and I was charged a $35 overdraft fee and even with the book basically costing me $38 I do not regret it one bit and the cost was well worth it and I am not even angry about the overdraft, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I do not know the author, I have no other stake in telling you my story than to let you know IT WORKS!!! not a little bit, but a WHOLE LOT!!! it worked like Gangbusters for me so "THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU" to Ms. Lanie Stevens, you helped me make my dream come true. I could not be happier if I tried.

This book is AMAZING. It's a fun way of using the LOA. When I do the exercise I feel great. Empowered, self confident. It's been only 10 days I haven't gotten "the guy" but l got me loving myself and feeling on top of the world and that is far better than getting the guy. I have manifested other things. But what makes this book so priceless is the Author. She answers your emails EVERYTIME and offers encouragement and insights. What other author does that? Her time & kindness remember those are priceless too.
