I don't really think he left ADDIE behind, but a great read!

I both loved and did not love this book... so this is going to be a weird review.

It's hard to think of anyone who has contributed more to the field of eLearning than Dr. Allen. Michael was on the original PLATO team and was a driving force behind Authorware (he provides a brief description of this time in the beginning of the book). He has been in the practical business of designing and producing eLearning products longer than the term eLearning has been around! Any insights he shares are worth listening to, including those shared in this book.

When I first read "leaving ADDIE" in the title, I had a mild panic - I consider myself an ISD disciple, so ADDIE is coded into my designer's DNA. When I read the beginning chapters describing ISD/ADDIE, I was amazed to see the box Michael had put ADDIE into - mainly describing it as a lock step, non-iterative "waterfall" process, the same way it had been defined back in the 1970s. Dr. Allen makes it clear he's not anti-ADDIE (he points out that the basic concepts of the ADDIE model are essential to any effective design process), but goes on to present ADDIE as too rigid to meet today's more flexible environment.

I found that I fell into his category of people who had tailored the process and created a variation of ISD/ADDIE that worked in their development... which is how I believe 99% of the ADDIE followers apply the process.

As Michael lays out the criteria for creating a successful learning product, I couldn't help but think how ADDIE can still be used to create engaging training. When he describes how ADDIE is often a budget-buster, I couldn't help but think of the large number of creative projects my teams over the years have delivered on time and within budget. Again, he makes room for my success by saying I've adapted the model, but only in the fact that I don't follow the rigid Branson et al. model from 1970s he presents from Don Clark's Big Dog & Little Dog site.

So the stage is now set for SAM - the Successive Approximation Model. He lays out the criteria for a successful model - it must be iterative, it must support collaboration, it must be efficient and effective, and it must be manageable (personally, I think ADDIE meets all these criteria, but I'll try to keep my focus on SAM). He lays out the three-step process of SAM: 1) Evaluate, 2) Design, & 3) Develop. That's it - that's the heart and soul of SAM. It's an iterative cycle you go through and repeat throughout the life cycle of the project. He also presents two models of SAM - SAM1 and SAM2.

In SAM1, the first iteration of Evaluate, Design, & Develop begins with an analysis of the situation, need, and goals (if I were keeping my focus on ADDIE, this would sound an awful lot like Analysis). You then move to Design, where you define the learning goals, behavior objectives, evaluation strategies, instructional treatments & media, and create representative design sketches (if this were ADDIE, this would be Design). Next is "Develop," where prototypes are developed based on the design. They are evaluated and enhanced in an iterative approach, and this continues until the learning product is completed.

For SAM1, your iterations repeat to evaluate the success of your first iteration, refine the prototype as needed, and develop a product closer to your final product. This cycle continues, presumably, until the final product is complete.

At some point, we assume the product is implemented and evaluated, but these steps are not included in his description of SAM. So my fellow ISD/ADDIE disciples will see my confusion as how SAM is such a revolutionary departure from how most of us practice ADDIE. I guess by treating each stage as more informal "bite size" phases, he's cutting off the rough edges, but I'm seeing ADDIE.

SAM2 adds project preparation and planning to the overall project lifecycle, as well as including Alpha, Beta, and Gold versions of the courseware. (I recognize this is an overly brief overview of the process, but you have to buy the book to get the real meat!) Again, in an ISD managed project, these phases are not new, nor is revisiting the design or prototypes based on client or learner feedback from later in the process. I guess the main difference is that this revisiting is driven by the process, rather than a potentially skipped step.

So at this point in my already long review, you've seen why I didn't love the book. The title and testimonials indicate this as a major departure from ADDIE, when SAM itself seems to me as really just a practical adaptation of ISD. So now, let me shift to why I loved the book...

In Part II of the book (about a quarter of the way through), the book picks up speed as Dr. Allen shifts to practical application of SAM. He lays out in great detail a technique called "The Savvy Start" - a project team kickoff that combines brainstorming, rapid prototyping, planning, revising, and storytelling. I believe that if every project started with a Savvy Start, 1) projects would be much more fun to work on, and 2) would yield a more engaging end product. While not every project can accommodate the three-day agenda of a Savvy Start, Michael discusses strategies to customize the meeting.

Next, he moves into an insightful description of Allen Interactions' approach to prototyping. He walks a basic example product through napkin sketching, draft prototype, to final product, introducing e-Sketching strategies and tools (i.e., balsamiq.com and zebrazapps.com).

Between the walkthroughs of The Savvy Start and prototyping, the modest cost of the book is justified right there. But wait, there's more...

Just as you're thinking to yourself, "how will I design the project plan for this approach?," he answers the question with a complete chapter dedicated to project planning for SAM. Planning, pricing, SME involvement, approvals & decision making, documentation, etc. are well addressed, and then he provides a sample project plan, including sample milestones & deliverables (one last time - it does look an awful lot like an ADDIE driven project plan). This chapter is valuable read to any eLearning project manager, and could almost be its own book (although more variations would be needed to justify that).

He then provides an excellent set of checklists for the evaluation SAM iteration (all project managers and quality assurance teams should compare these checklists against their own!).

The book closes rather abruptly with a fine chapter on "getting to Gold" (borrowing software development stages, Alpha version, Beta version, and Gold version), and wrapping up any lose ends on the project. While a fine chapter, I was expecting some level of summary to the book... a moment of "TA-DA!" or "try it on your next project," but instead hit the bibliography.

In closing, while this should not seem revolutionary to the ISD/ADDIE people, maybe that's a good thing... I found many insights in this book I can adopt and fold into my current ISD model that more "revolutionary" approaches fail to stick. While I would have loved to see more examples (maybe two or three representative cradle to grave examples walked through), the book is worth every penny.

Bottom line, I heartily recommend this book to the following people involved in eLearning projects: design leads, developers responsible for prototyping, project managers, and key project stakeholders.

SAM should be your new best friend!

If you are someone who knows anything about designing and developing elearning, then you know about Dr. Michael Allen. This book is for you.

If you are someone who knows nothing about designing and developing elearning, but wants to learn, then you need to know about Dr. Michael Allen. This book is for you.

If you are a recent graduate of an Instructional Design program you know about ADDIE. You have been taught about the phases and what happens in each phase. That's the theory.

Welcome to the real world. (not that the theory isn't important to know, it's just that institutions of higher learning do little to prepare you for the real world - if you happened to attend a program that gave you some real-world exposure, like the one I teach at, good for you and you are now just that much better prepared!)

Those of you who are working in the field know that you don't go from A to D to D to I to E in a nice simple straight line. There are iterations. There are reviews and changes. There are approvals and suggested changes. There is re-work. There can be clarification on the target audience, on intended outcomes, on the content, on the design, on the media, on the delivery, etc. You hope your up-front work keeps all that to a minimum, but it is rarely as simple as "Ok, design is over, on to development."

The problem is, nobody ever explained that to you in a way beyond just the theory. Or, told you how the process "really" works. Or, gave you processes where you could apply real-world conventions.

Until now.

SAM is a Common Sense ADDIE Model

I have been a member of various training organizations for the past 15 years. Despite the linear/waterfall depictions of ADDIE, in practice those implementations behave as iterative processes. If you are new to the field of training then this book can be helpful in learning about the right way to do things; however, for those who have been involved actively in leading learning projects, the lessons from this book may not be anything new.
