If you buy one book... Mohr's Financial Management 101

If you buy one book to get control over the financial side of your small business, I would say Mohr's Financial Management 101 might be the one. If you are starting your own business or have a small family business and need to understand the financial health of your business, this book will get you what you need. If you're tired of staring at financial statements that don't add up and you don't know if someone is swindling you, work through this book!

I'm a business teacher and this is one of my "Strongly Recommended" textbooks for one of my courses. Of the hundreds of books on this subject I've browsed, I choose this one to give my students a hands-on, practical guide to getting financial control over their business quickly. Financial Management 101 is not only an on-ramp to understanding, speaking intelligently, and managing by the numbers, but also this book is fairly complete for a new business owner or new manager level. You could do worse than just buying this one book and reading it and maybe using it: ~90% of small business owners do (do worse!). About the Author
In 1980 East German author Christa Wolf took a trip to Greece accompanied by her husband, Gerhard. In 1982 she was awarded a guest lectureship at the University of Frankfurt, where in May she delivered a series of five "Lectures on Poetics" relating to her Greek travels and studies. The fifth "lecture" was ad raft of the novel Cassandra, which she then revised and expanded for publication. The four introductory lectures were published separately in Germany under the title Conditions of a Narrative: Cassandra; The Frankfurt Lectures on Poetics (Voraussetzungen einer Erz�hlung: Kassandra). This volume presents the novel first, followed by its companion lectures, which illuminate its background and implications.

Myth Retelling

Christa Wolf retells a myth from the the perspective of a woman who was only given a few lines in Euripides' Agamemnon (and mentioned once or twice in the Iliad.)

What's gripping about this story is not the fact that it's another variation of the sack of Troy, but the fact that someone had the guts to write it in Cassandra's words. Cassandra, whom the Greeks and Trojans call a crazy witch is the only person to oppose corruption when she sees it. She is strong and honest and powerful and intelligent, but Troy and Greece deny her a voice because she is a woman.

Some people insist that Christa Wolf grabs this fact (that she's another alienated woman) and runs on a feminist spree. Others insist that she addresses those oh-so-common themes in feminist literature: having no voice and lacking an identity in a patriarchal culture. But FRIENDS, these themes aren't only reserved for women, men also struggle with these issues. Look at Kleist and Murakami, these authors also express an inner turmoil because of the lack of an individual identity or the existence of a collective cultural one that alienates its members.

Cassandra isn't an overly feminine, esoteric, and hard-to-read piece of literature. It's beautiful not only for its content but the stream of consciousness that takes you into the very black and white core of Troy. It's honest and funny and sad and aggressive and beautiful and powerful and dark. It's one of those "good" books your brain craves for after reading every James Patterson and Linda Howard novel you might have bought from the Shoprite book aisle. :)

Beautiful prose, but not quite enough...

"Cassandra" does not read like a novel. Rather, one feels as though one is a member of the jury set to judge the entire life of one woman when the sentance (death) has already been decided. Christa Wolf doesn't retell the fall of Troy from the perspective of a female narrator. Instead, she invites the reader into the mindset of a woman in a society that is losing itself to war and to the male realm. Wolf's Cassandra is a starkly lonely figure, suffering from her isolation even before the seige of Troy begins. Bringing in a number of feminist themes to her rendition of the classic Greek tale, she weaves beautiful prose to give perspective to Cassandra's last hours.

In the traditional myth the prophetess Cassandra predicts that Troy will fall to the Greeks but no one believes her, and she is ultimately shunned in the end when her prophecy holds true. Wolf entraps the reader in Cassandra's mind, which often teeters on the brink of madness for reasons that lay largely unexplained. I felt intimately connected to the narrator at the end but largely disatisfied. There are really no other characters in the novel - merely shadows of other relationships that are never given life in and of themselves. Wolf's writing is exquisite, but I often felt more like someone sneaking a read at a forbidden diary, where I felt at the mercy of the revelations the writer felt like making. Allusions are made to friendships, loves, passions, childhood memories, but are not made explicit enough to resonate. Despite the well-crafted passages, I gave the novel 3 stars for this reason; it simply wasn't enough. I reccomend it as an interesting glimpse into the mind of a woman immobilized by her empowerment in an increasingly masculinized age (even though the strength of this perspective has lessoned some since the novel was written on the heels of the 2nd wave of the feminist movement) At times Cassandra's self-fixation became almost too much to bear, but Wolf's excellent writing carried me through until the end.

It's a powerful book, intellectually engrossing.

For about five years I have read, reread and taught (to eleventh graders) Cassandra, and each time I have groped deeper into its human and literary liklihoods. It's still compelling to me for it myriad facets of content and form, but I can't help wondering about the real-politics of Ms Wolf's life and the masculine-feminine politics of our time. There is great learning in it and cause for great deliberation--by a woman awaiting violent death: Would what we call civilization be differently composed if even half our history, philosophy, psychology, politics, art had been penned by women? How was human prehistory ordered? Why is God-presence so matter of fact, and goddess-presence so contentious, if admitted? Who/What is Cybele, really? I can't wait to read Medea.

I have read a little over 80% and have found it very enlightening.

I had no idea that his father had pulled him out of school in his home town and had sent him off to Edinburgh, to get him away from "that Christian influence."

His biographer has highlighted what his books reveal, i.e., that did not waste time or ink on scolding those with whom he didn't agree, in fact for the most part, he did did not defend against his attackers.

What characterizes his ministry (most of which found its way into his many books) was determination to stay positive and to uphold the Lord Jesus in His rightful position as Lord of the church and Lord of the universe.

For Christians not content to just accept Christ and then let "local churches" or denominations dictate what not to do, where not to go and who not to see Mr. Sparks offers us insights and wisdom that bring a stature of clarity and simplicity not heard of since the epistles of the apostle Paul were written. Of course, I am not suggesting that the 66 books which comprise our Holy Bible and are "inspired by God ..." need to be added to but for readers and seekers who are dsillusioned by the offerings of current Christian bookstores dive and stretch into Shaped by Vision by Rex Bell as an introduction to T. Austin Sparks.

This Biography of T. Austin-Sparks by Rex Beck is an excellent portrayal of a wonderful movement of the work of God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ in the life, times and ministry of God's servant and faithful son, Theodore Austin-Sparks. As you read this Biography, the testimony you can sense by the Holy Spirit is the evidence of the great relationship our dear brother T. Austin-Sparks had with his Eternal Lord and Master.
As revealed in this Biography, this relationship could only ever be entered into by a complete and utter submission to God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Like brother Sparks, the writer (Rex Beck) has also seen the need for this Supreme and Eternal Vision of God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and this helps manifest this Biography as a living manuscript giving all honor for the Glory of God.
Whilst having read many Biographies of T. Austin-Sparks by various other Authors, it is felt that this is the best. It is believed that this Biography has been very deeply enhanced by the writer's spiritual understanding of the many and various times of travail that T. Austin-Sparks and his faithful co-laborers went through as their lives were shaped by Vision of Christ and His Cross. As Rex Beck aptly portrays concerning his title "Shaped by Vision", Mr. Sparks and his true friends fully realized that the Church of the Living God is only "Shaped by the Vision of their Lord and Master", as Christ went to the Cross and paid the Redemption price for all. It was clear that T. Austin-Sparks saw that God never intended His children to remain babes living on milk but to grow up into Christ, Who was his Head and the Head of His Church universal according to (v.v.) Hebrews 5:11 to Hebrews 6:3.
The Biography points out that Mr. Sparks wrote of, "Admonishing every man and teaching every man.... that we may present every man perfect (complete) in Christ” (Colossians 1:28). “We believe that all the sovereign activities of the Holy Spirit are directed to and dictated by this end and object.”
Whilst this reader has certainly never met Mr. T. Austin-Sparks face to face or known him personally in any other way, this Biography really brings forth a living portrayal of his life and heartfelt longing to present all believers complete in Christ. I thoroughly recommend this Biography of T. Austin-Sparks by Rex Beck, "Shaped by Vision".

Truly outstanding for self-study, lacks formal definitions. Needs to be published in two volumes.

I have included my review of the previous edition, with minor updating, as it is still applicable. The additional material in this edition is a nice improvement, as is the lower price.

However, there is now a caveat. In my opinion, the publishers made an unfortunate decision to publish this in one volume. It needs to be published in two parts. While publishing in one volume may reduce costs, it is definitely not user-friendly. Its now weighs almost 6-1/2 pounds. This makes it very, very difficult, perhaps impossible, to carry and use easily. Its weight requires a table, or large book support, be used to work comfortably. The previous edition was almost two pounds lighter, and had a smaller size, making that edition comfortable to handle. I had no problem carrying it with me to refer to as time allowed. The weight and size of this edition make that, for me, impossible.

This is an excellent text for self-study or as a supplement to a classroom text. It is fairly wide ranging, covering a large portion of the mathematics needed during the first few years of an engineering, or physical science program. However, it is not quite comprehensive, lacking some areas that have gained significant importance in recent times, e.g, discrete transforms. Although some Fourier Series and transforms are covered in the companion volume "Advanced Engineering Mathematics".

The pretests and revision (more commonly called review in the US) sections are quite helpful. The book de-emphasizes formal definitions, as concepts and intuitive descriptions are provided in conjunction with examples. However, in some instances this can lead to problems, where the appropriate problem-solving approach is well-presented but the lack of a formal definition can lead to some "fuzziness". In these cases an inexpensive mathematics dictionary, or standard text, should provide the needed clarity.

Some sections or chapters are quite elementary and may not be needed by many readers. For example, the book starts with an approximately 60 page section on arithmetic.

The book is well designed and laid out with black type, avoiding the distracting overuse of color found in some competing texts. The authors are usually quite clear, and quickly get to the "meat" of a topic. Extra material is kept to a minimum. One section where this is not true is the Programme F.10 (section) on Functions where unneeded, and arguably unhelpful, box graphics are introduced and used fairly extensively to visually denote the the ideas of function input and output. However, the boxes are not standard mathematical constructs for handling functions. In my opinion, these extraneous constructs are an unnecessary distraction, as the function notation carries with it all the structure needed for comprehension, and is what students will see in later work. In reviewing the 6th edition, I had hoped these boxes would be eliminated in later editions. However, they are, unfortunately, retained for this edition.

The book still shows a much earlier publishing heritage as some mathematical terms no longer in common usage are nonetheless retained.

For a book this large in size, there are an unusually small number of errors or misstatements and these are usually obvious. One example where this is not true is when the authors use the terms "range" and "co-domain", page 271, incorrectly as synonyms.

This is an outstanding and well-written book. The book's presentation of desired learning outcomes, i.e., behavioral objectives, at the start of each Programme is excellent. Material is presented in easily digestible short sections that allow for breaks to be taken at almost any time, without the need to stop in the middle of an unfinished section. Pretest quizzes allow readers to determine what sections they can skip and what sections they need to work on. There are very few backward references to previously covered material. A minor deficiency is the lack of more formal definitions. These are usually not needed. In a number of cases they would help aid understanding and reduce the chance of encountering unexpected problems in later work. However, the book's strong emphasis on carefully developing concepts needed to comfortably handle the mathematical manipulation and problem solving skills required for engineering is exceptional.

There are additions in this edition, but if the 6th can be found at a significantly lower price, not the case on Amazon at the time of this review, it would likely serve as well. Owing to its lighter weight and size, that edition may prove even more useful for those who spend considerable time away from their home/office/classroom/etc.

This edition's uncomfortably large size and weight is compensated for by its outstanding content. It continues to deserve the highest recommendation.

So close to a 5-star book...

I would have given this book 5 stars but for two things: There are errors and no errata to correct them.

I returned to college two years ago to finish a degree. I finished high school more than 20 years ago and bought the book as a review/refresher product, and secondarily as a guide for more advanced mathematics that I have not yet learned. I'm not fond of math, but it is a fundamental part of my new career field.

Pros:

- Absolutely spectacular breadth of coverage
- Some different approaches from what I was taught in school. Some of these approaches have provided additional insight.
- Very clear, step-by-step explanations walk you through each problem
- Plenty of practice problems with solutions

However, I keep finding errors. They're not on every page, but they're there, and that's a very bad thing for readers trying to review and learn additional mathematics. I could find no errata on the publisher's companion website. I've been running into errors a lot lately, reading computer science and mathematics texts, and it's very frustrating. I was a different kind of engineer in the Army, and we made it a high priority to get things right, the first time. I wish the publishing world would pick up on the practice.

A justified classic
By still searching
This book represents a masterpiece in clear exposition. It takes the patient reader from quite basic mathematics through to that required by third year undergraduates in engineering and physical science courses in planned, frame-based, systematic and methodical steps. Each chapter has revision summaries, revision exercises and quizzes together with answers. Even mathematics undergraduates would probably benefit from it as part of their reading diet.

It's been the 'staple' diet for such courses for decades for a reason: it has few if any peers!

I am the kind of people who doesn't have self-discipline. I was like this from my early years.
I bought this book because I was curious. I thought, how this book can help me with me self-discipline when
I know that I have eaten enough but hell yeah take a look at this chocolate cake made from perfection and rainbows
and I want to eat it too? Can it stop me from being hungry? I don't think so. Well I am happy to say that
this book proved me wrong. In the first page I read the following: "Be in charge of your life".
I liked it and that's why I continued to read this amazing book that changed the way I am thinking, not me.
I came in full understanding of my emotions and why I felt boredom when it needn't.
It showed me all the wrong steps I have taken and how I could change that. Now I am stronger than ever.
