About the Author

David Adams holds the Ian Mactaggart Chair of Property and Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow, where Steve Tiesdell was Senior Lecturer in Public Policy until his death in 2011. They worked together for over a decade, first at the University of Aberdeen and then at Glasgow, sharing a mutual interest in state-market relations in land and property, and applying this to research and teaching on planning, public policy, real estate development, urban design and urban regeneration. Before moving to Aberdeen, Steve worked at the Universities of Nottingham and Sheffield, while David was previously at the Universities of Reading and Manchester. Shaping Places represents the culmination of their mutual endeavour and builds on previous joint publications, including their edited book Urban Design in the Real Estate Development Process (2011).

David and Steve have each researched and published widely in their respective fields. Steve’s previous books include Revitalising Historic Urban Quarters (co-author 1996), Public Places – Urban Spaces: The Dimensions of Urban Design (co-author 2003 and 2010) and The Urban Design Reader (co-editor 2006). David’s previous books include Urban Planning and the Development Process (author 1994), Greenfields, Brownfields and Housing Development (co-author 2002) and Planning, Public Policy and Property Markets (co-editor 2005).

Five stars are not enough. This is an absolutely superb introduction to Wittgenstein's thought, its background, its development, and its later influence. Schroeder does a wonderful job explaining both the 'Tractatus' and the later 'Philosophical Investigations', and the relationship between the two.

On a certain representationalist ("picture theory") view of language, Wittgenstein thought that the analytic perspective known as logical atomism had to be correct on logical grounds, and that all the problems of philosophy capable of being sensibly talked about were thereby solved, at least in principle. The logical form of a sensible assertion about the facts of the world must mirror the logical form of the facts it describes. Bertrand Russell's work had created an audience primed to accept such a doctrine, and analytical philosophy was off and running. The logical positivists, for example, quickly picked it up to use as a sword to slay all metaphysics and to put ethical and aesthetic assertions in their proper place -- somewhere outside of philosophy properly construed. Ayer's 'Language, Truth, and Logic' presented this approach to a wide audience. The 'Tractatus' itself was not easy to understand, and Wittgenstein protested that he was being misinterpreted in important ways. But he had revolutionized philosophy nevertheless.

But Wittgenstein, meanwhile, was having second thoughts about the representationalist view of language that was foundational to his 'Tractatus'. In actual use, language gets used in myriad ways other than to describe a factual situation, ways that often have a slippery quality that is not amenable to logical analysis. Philosophical analysis cannot create a level of precision that does not exist in the actual use of the language. If a concept describes no more than a "family resemblance" among the particulars it is used to refer to, then no amount of analysis can render it sharp. A sharpened concept would be a new and artificial one, a construction of the philosopher and no longer the one being used by real speakers. Wittgenstein argued that language that is not disciplined by some contact with the world is free to spin its wheels and end up in all kinds of nonsense. Thus, a speaker cannot usefully provide meaning to his utterances by some private mental imagery that accompanies them; meaningful communication requires that the meaning of words is a matter of their socially established, conventional uses; we know what words mean when we know how they are used in our linguistic community. It was considerations like these, and many more, that led Wittgenstein to the views that were eventually published as 'Philosophical Investigations', and to leave behind the pinched version of language found in the 'Tractatus'. In effect, he launched a revolution against his own, earlier, revolution.

I cannot recommend Schroeder's book highly enough. Its organization is just right, it covers all the major issues, and the writing is extremely good. There is plenty of historical context and biographical detail. Schroeder knows his subject inside and out, including the secondary literature and commentary that has grown up around Wittgenstein's work. Systematic, crystal clear, and comprehensive -- what more could you want? I would love to take this author's course on Wittgenstein, because he must be a superlative teacher. Highest possible recommendation.

I can't quite believe it but yes, it really does work.....

UPDATE 11/23/11 - I don't usually "update" my reviews as some do, but I wanted to extol the virtues of this very simple yet effective book and support the author in any way I can. Chances are if you are looking at reviews then you are where I was about two weeks ago. Searing, agonizing pain in my left shoulder anytime I lifted or rotated my arm a certain way. I have been doing these exercises for less than a week and I would estimate an almost complete recovery in my left shoulder. This is the same shoulder attached to the same arm that I couldn't lift to put on a sweater just ONE WEEK AGO. When sitting in a chair with arm-rests I had to keep my arm by my side because placing it on an arm-rest caused intense pain. I have been performing the stretching exercises the author recommends twice daily and will begin the strength training exercises as soon as I obtain a pair of light weights. I now understand that I have an inherent weakness in this shoulder so I hopefully continue doing these exercises. Once again, it is astonishing how quickly these exercises corrected my shoulder problems. To the author, once again, thank you....

On a recent episode of PARKS AND RECREATION, the character of Ron Swanson comments on his philosophy of recommendations. He states (and I am abbreviating) that he doesn't recommend anything he doesn't use and love. He then goes on to extol the virtues of a "military-issue mustache trimmer". Funny stuff. What isn't funny was the pain and discomfort I experienced until I purchased this invaluable book. As background, I am a 52 year old male, in reasonably decent shape. I do quite a bit of work around our house, which we just recently renovated. Lots of lifting, cutting, chopping, sawing....so a great deal of shoulder strain. About 3 months ago I developed a slightly stiff shoulder. Within a month this pain became almost unbearable. I was unable to lift my arm above shoulder length without SEARING pain in my shoulder area. My shoulder would not rotate, instead I had to move my entire body to accommodate my aching shoulder. I tried a prescription of Prednisone and when that didn't help I started taking three or four Advil just to do the basic, daily chores. I tried icing the shoulder, then slathering it with one of about 10 different rub-on liniments that people had recommended. I tried hot baths and hot showers. I used a compression shirt from UnderArmour because that seemed to help with my sore tennis elbow at times. Sleeping at night was a nightmare because every time I turned over the shoulder pain would wake me up. In fact, the only activity that provided any relief was raking leaves. Something in that motion was stretching out a muscle or a tendon, but then I ran out of leaves to rake. (One of the exercises in this book mimics the action of leaf-raking). All of these remedies provided at best, temporary relief. I never consulted a doctor or had an MRI done on the shoulder, but friends told me I had a frozen shoulder and possibly a tear in my rotator cuff. The pain got worse and worse until about a week ago when I needed help to raise my arm high enough so I could wear a sweater.

Three days ago I received this book. Instead of just rushing to the chapters where the exercises are located I started at the beginning and I am really glad I did. The author provides detailed explanations and drawings, which fully describe the various joints, muscles, and tendons at work in the shoulder area. Then I got to the stretching exercises. After doing all the exercises that first day I noticed I slept a little more comfortably that evening. On the second day of performing the exercises I noticed about a 10% reduction in pain with some improved mobility. Now it is day three and I can't believe it but I CAN LIFT MY ARM ABOVE MY HEAD. Yes of course there is still some pain, but it isn't the searing stabbing pain I had experienced. In fact I just reached up for something on a high shelf without experiencing any stabbing pain. THESE EXERCISES REALLY DO WORK. I don't know if the exercises will work for everyone with agonizing shoulder pain but it is working for me. I cannot thank this author enough for making this book available so thank you, thank you, thank you!

Comes up a little short for me. His exercise routines are sound, and I agree about strength exercises helping, but I would have liked to have seen more about the anatomy involved with compound movements. He did not show anything about raising your arm from different angles to the body and what tendons and muscles are affected. Also, movement with a bent or straight arm covers different areas. The illustrations were not very good either. It would also have been nice to see more about tailoring a routine based on the location of the injury. I also believe that exercises using the range of motion you do have to strengthen areas of the rotator cuff and adjacent muscles is helpful.
I think it is too expensive for what it offers.

Calcium Deposits in Rotary Cuff

I am 56 years old. I have calcium deposits in my left rotary cuff. I have known things were not quite right for 15 years but had an x-ray for the first time 1 1/2 years ago and I have had 2 cortisone shots since. This gets old & you have to wait to get them & I don't want to depend on these. I almost had to get another one 2 months ago but iced up like crazy, read & reread this book & did the exercises. I now feel as good as a week after I get a shot. I've been to physical therapy, but this book has exercises that I was not shown. I do the stretches 5 days a week (3 minutes total time) and I lift the weights - I am up to 5 pounds. I think lifting the weights & increasing the pounds is more effective than the bands at physical therapy.

Quite a find!

I was very excited when I found this and even more excited when it arrived. And for good reason. I have loved Rite of Spring since I first heard it, and having listened to a recording repeatedly, I have been itching to try it out on the piano. This edition includes COMPLETE transcriptions of Firebird, Petrushka, and Rite of Spring, and the score is perfect for following along with the orchestral music since you can easily see the chords and melody. Believe me, it's much easier than trying to follow along with the mega-complex orchestral score of Rite of Spring. The difficulty level varies greatly within each of the ballets; there are extremely easy parts and extremely difficult parts. Good sight-reading ability is very helpful in all three, but particularly in Rite of Spring. And yes, the RoS transcription is the most difficult in the book; however, I get around a lot of the difficulties by cheating... you know, omitting a few notes here and there... ; )

Belgium must be Michael Jackson's idea of heaven. The diversity, individuality, and ubiquity of beer in that country astounds even the beer sophisticate. Belgians lay claim to dozens of brewing styles that, motley as they are, read like a royal registry of beer: Lambics, Abbey Ales, Belgian Whites, Strong Golden Ales, Trappist Ales, Belgian Browns. Consider the Lambic brewer's "wind through the rafters" approach, in which wild yeast and airborne bacteria are responsible for the fermentation process and the otherworldly flavor characteristics of the final product. The brewing style is so dependent on the microflora of the greater Brussels area that it cannot be successfully duplicated anywhere else in the world.

Jackson exposes the history and inner workings of this quiet, quirky brewing behemoth with characteristic thoroughness and enthusiasm. The late Michael Jackson was the world’s preeminent beer writer, probably invented beer styles and was one of the midwives that brought the popularity of craft beer to life. In all his books he hammers home the idea that beer deserves the same reverence and respect given to wine and in this book his discussions of Belgian Beers shows you why. Michael originally wrote this book in 1991 and gave it a final revision in 1998, so it is 17 years out of date but it is still a worthwhile read. An immensely charming and entertaining raconteur, Michael weaves the story of Belgian beer using the threads of culture, geography, the ingredients of brewing, and how they all work together. Then he delves into the various styles and how they are made, how they taste and visits some of the notable breweries for each style and describes their beer so alluringly that you want to go drink it. Even out of date, Michael’s knowledge, personality and joy of beer informs on every page.

I've loved Belgian beers for years, but never truly understood them fully until now. Where do you begin to classify them? To choose one to drink? Michael Jackson shows you how. From the ancient beginning of the brewing of Belgian beer, to now, as you smell, taste, and swallow, Michael Jackson takes you through the process. This is education in the most delightful way. Great photographs, delightful anecdotes,You almost feel you are on a stool beside him. My wife,who is Belgian born,loved the insights into her native land and traditions. If you can only buy one book on beer, this must be it!
