They address questions central to the debate, including the compatibility of apt success with some forms of luck; the connection between aptness and a safety condition for knowledge; the fallibility of perceptual recognitional abilities; actual-world reliabilism and reliabilism about epistemic justification; the nature of the agency required to make a cognitive success truly one's own; the basic conceptual framework of performance-based epistemology. Part II explores Sosa's epistemology of a priori intuition; internalist objections to Sosa's views on second-order knowledge; the roles that epistemic agency is meant to play in performance-based epistemology; the value that second-order reflection may have; epistemic incompetence; and the problem of epistemic circularity and criticises Sosa's alternative solution.

Miguel Angel Fernandez Vargas received his PhD in Philosophy from University College London in 2006. He joined the Institute of Philosophical Research of UNAM that same year. He works primarily in epistemology, specially in epistemic normativity, models of epistemic evaluation, and scepticism, though he is also interested in philosophy of mind and the history of analytic philosophy. His publications include 'The Possibility of Epistemic Responsibility' in B. Reed (ed.) A fascinating and thought-provoking look at human society that just happened to be set in a dystopian future.

I opened this book expecting a dystopian fantasy that, hopefully, was an interesting take on what has become quite a stale topic.
What I found was a fascinating and thought-provoking look at human society that just happened to be set in a dystopian future.

Without giving anything away, the premise behind “Laplatia” is that in the near future, Earth no longer has the raw materials to produce electricity. However, a process has been developed whereby human thoughts can be removed by Extractors and then turned into Fos, a raw material that can be used to generate electricity. This makes human imagination a commodity that cannot be wasted with the result that using the imagination, having a dream or just thinking creatively can ONLY happen if linked up to an Extractor.

Pretty big concept, isn’t it? Pretty far-fetched too, huh?

Maybe if one was reading a typical dystopian fantasy where the focus is on how people get along in a new world order. And while “Laplatia” does have elements of this, the primary focus is on how having imagination forbidden affects the INDIVIDUAL. And this is what makes “Laplatia” such a wonderful read.

You don’t need to be a psychologist to appreciate how Loche takes the reader into the mind of people wrenched from imaginative thought. The reader experiences depression, compulsions, paranoia, not to mention extreme paranoia and anxiety. The reader witnesses social disorder as envisioned by a philosophical mind expressed by communication skills that are both clear and passionate.

This is not dystopian so much as thriller and not so much fantasy as psychological insight. Read it if you want to expand your mind while having a jolly good read.

After reading Black Bile from the same author i had great expectations over this new work. They were highly overcome. Laplatia was definitely one of the best 2016 readings so far. A impactful book that took my breath away and I'm sure it will take yours.

Let's start talking about the plot. I'll try not to give spoilers, I promisse.
Laptlatia is a dystopia. But a different one. It reminds us the old school dystopias like Fahrenheit 451 or Brave new World, making us really reflective, and sometimes, uncomfortable. It really change us.

Laplatia is a city in a not so far future, where all the dreams, imaginations, fantasies and thoughts are not allowed, at least freely. If you're gonna use it, you'll have to do it using an extractor that will change it into Fos, the new source of energy used in the world. You can think that it is not a big deal, after all, you can help mankind and be ok with it. No. It's not. Collateral damages - and none of them soft - are involved. Things like paranoia, deep depression and lots and lots of mental problems. That's what happen when you're not allowed to use your imagination freely. And we follow the life of those people, living in this despicable new way of living.

Loch creates a cast of characters so real that you feel they could be your father, your mother, your siblings or your neighbor. Each one of then affected differently by the extraction or the life in this new world. It is impossible not to empathize yourself with one or all of them, or identify with them. My favorites are Aaron, Hermes, Daphne and Ophelia. I felt for them. They really moved me.

This story makes you think. Makes you valorize the life and your mind. Makes you see things for a new perspective. It's a book filled with philosophy, but not the boring kind. It's a must read to all who the people out there who enjoys a creative story, full of emotions, thrill and sentiment.

Loch's narrative is alive. You can see the characters, you can feel them. It's at the same time, poetic and chilling. I must warn you that, there are chapters that you may want to read with the lights on, specially the one where is told us how the world got to the point they are. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK RIGHT AWAY, just saying.

"They both said nothing. There was nothing to talk about. "

" Fos had to be made and the machines had to keep running. Cases like Ophelia’s were mere flukes. Zargos was powerless to change any of it. He’d not only have to endure what advancing civilization had done to Ophelia, but also accept it. "

"Nevertheless, all these imaginative thoughts would have to be processed by the state-owned Extractors. It was the law—one that had allowed mankind to prevail. That happened many decades ago. Thenceforth the right of someone to freely use his or her own imagination was banished. "

" Therefore, even just a few minutes of power outage turned the city into chaotic, frenetic tingling.

"And what did the culture of Fos production do? It created, with its numerous media resources, more and more lacking; more and more desire for the generation of imagination. "

Interesting read for those who prefer character development over plot.

I received a PDF version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was impressed with the author's well-developed writing, however, this book needs more proofreading and editing as there are grammar issues found throughout the book. Here are just four examples:

-Page 44: "He looked at the boy . . . and thought about he'd slapped him."
-Page 62: "But they soon they realized . . ."
-Page 84: "They approached slowly, never breaking eye contact until they their faces stood . . ."
-Page 94: "At this time, Aaron had arrived destination."

With the exception of a few instances (like this sentence from page 45: "He took his car and rapidly drove it there."), I liked the author's prose.

When I started this book I was expecting something different based on the description (but it may have just been my misunderstanding). I was expecting a book that would be more about the dystopian society that the story takes place in, but as the book went on it became increasingly clear that the plot of the dystopian society was a backdrop for delving into the lives of the characters (much like how the movie Titanic was a backdrop for Jack and Roses' love story).

For me, I prefer a more plot-driven tale than a character-driven tale. If you are big on characters this book may be right up your alley (but not for those who prefer stories carried predominantly by plot). In Laplatia, aside from a brief power outage earlier in the book, nothing related to action happened in the story till chapter 19 when a prison fire breaks out.

I believe this author has great potential.

SEX
There's a description of an adulterous affair but the affair is not described in sexual detail.

LANGUAGE
Very little if any. In fact, I can't recall any profanity in the book which is surprisingly refreshing nowadays. (Thank you, Alexandre A. Loch.)

WORLDVIEW
The theory of evolution is spoken of as fact.

VIOLENCE
Minimal. The book contains a description of two stabbings.

Riddled with suspense, and a captivating cast of characters - a 'flawless' sequel

Alison "Ali" DiLaurentis had the four B's of popularity: beauty, brains, body, and boys. She also had four amazing best friends - Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields. As if their friendship weren't enough, she also knew secrets about all of them. Secrets that no one else even suspected, from bulimia to unfaithful parents, and everywhere in between. Then, one day, just as the summer was beginning, Ali disappeared, leaving four friends weeping in her wake. While their sorrow was strong, Ali's sudden disappearance was also a bit of a relief. After all, now their secrets would never be revealed. But the fact that Ali's body had never been uncovered always left a slight hesitation in their mind. That is, until she was found under a pile of cement, proving that their secrets would stay dead and buried. But maybe they spoke too soon. After four long years, Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily are brought back together to mourn at the funeral of their long lost best friend. But things hit a sour note when the mysterious "A" contacts all of them once more, threatening to reveal their secrets and pin the blame on them for "The Jenna Thing." As if the eerie note isn't horrifying enough, each girl is shocked to see that the police have re-opened Alison's case. Only this time it's being treated as a murder, leaving the four former friends open for police questioning at any time. To make matters worse, Toby Cavanaugh - Jenna's reform school brother - has returned to the quiet town of Rosewood, attending nearby Tate Academy. And, while the former geek turned hottie seems harmless enough this time around, there's a mischievous glimmer in his eye that's leaving everyone on edge. It doesn't help that, since Toby's sudden arrival, "A" has been sending more and more notes. Making threats, demanding them to perform certain acts, and even spying on their every move. While the girls know that they should confide in one another regarding "A's" sudden attacks, they can't bring themselves to reveal such intimate, and oft-times embarrassing, details to one another. It doesn't help that a sense of mistrust has grown between all of them over the years, pushing them more into the acquaintance category, as opposed to the friend category; or that they're all facing certain dramas in their lives right now. Dramas that could tear them apart, and ruin their lives in a heartbeat. From the arrival of a deadbeat dad, to the rekindling of a forbidden romance, and even moving into trusting a former enemy territory. Spencer, Hanna, Emily, and Aria think that they'll be able to handle the newest drama on their own. But, as "A" moves closer in their direction, they begin to realize that if they're not careful, they may just be buried alive by their many scandalous secrets.

While Sara Shepard's debut, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, gave readers a character sketch, a surface look, if you will, at Hanna, Spencer, Emily, Aria, and even the missing Ali; FLAWLESS brings us back to where the first installment left off, the day of Ali's funeral, and instantly moves in to dissecting each of the aforementioned characters, giving readers the chance to get to know them better. Shepard has a talent for making the reader sympathize with, yet, at the same time, dislike certain people introduced. Her ability to make secondary characters memorable is amazing, and truly makes for a delightful read. While I find Aria and Hanna to be the most enchanting characters, simply because I can relate to both of them in various ways, I must admit that both Emily and Spencer are captivating in their own ways. The vulnerability that Hanna shows as she comes to terms with, and attempts to defeat bulimia, while giving into the pressures of anorexia nervosa, are addicting; while Spencer's inability to resist her older sister, Melissa's, boyfriends is jaw-dropping. Emily, like Hanna, is attempting to come to terms with the "real" her, which many readers will relate to quite well; while Aria is wacky and wonderful, and just working to keep her family together. Combined, each girls story presents a wonderful topping to the underlying truth: Ali's mysterious disappearance. With "A" moving in closer on every page, it's obvious that Shepard is working on revealing his or her identity sometime soon - or so we can hope. Riddled with suspense, and a captivating cast of characters - a 'flawless' sequel.

I enjoyed this book because it pulled you in and you always wanted to read, I disliked it because at some points the author tracked into a different time and it got confusing, but overall it was a great book and I can't wait to read the 3 book.

I loved the second book of the series

I loved the second book of the series! It was gripping and very fascinating. It was like riding on a thrilling roller coaster. The only problem was the ending. It ended abruptly leaving me hanging with a thousand questions. Is there a third book? Because there truly should be one. This series is too good for such a disjointed ending. Otherwise it was great!!!!

I usually don't write book reviews, but this book made me. Usually when you have a book series, the second book is worse then the first one. However, in this situation this book was the most thrilling story. Gordon Korman planned this series out perfectly because this book didn't kill me from boredom. I cant wait for the third book to come out. If you like books with an action adventure effect, read the masterminds series!

I stumbled on this book by accident, but couldn't quit reading it once I started. Full of suspense, this book was a great find.

Simple Yet Addicting

I'm not going to bother writing an in-depth review because I know that not many people will read this review. This book isn't exactly a hot seller.

But if you are into supernatural tales, I would highly recommend this series. The books are not long and they have a writing style that is aimed to appeal to a younger audience, yet the story is also quite dark and has undertones and subtext that older teens and adults could appreciate.

The books are fastpaced, interesting, and actually creepy. I read lots of adult horror novels and books but I still found this book series fascinating. The story pulled me in and I read each book in a matter of two or three days, and that was only because I forced myself to put the book down - every chapter ends with something that makes you want to keep reading.

While reading these books, I am able to perfectly imagine everything that happens as though I'm actually seeing it. The characters are interesting and you care about what happens to them, which makes you feel more into the story when something bad may happen to them. And the stories are able to be creepy because you don't really know what's happening, you don't know who the villain is. The atmosphere is just very well constructed.

So basically, I'd HIGHLY recommend this if you're looking for a fast read and you like suspense/horror. If you have negative feelings about the story based on other reviews here and the plot, then don't read it. If you think it's gonna be bad, it probably will be. But I bought it without knowing a THING about it and now this series is one of my favorites. I enjoyed this more than any Stephen King novel, but hey, maybe that's just me.

Amazingly Twisted

This has to be Richie's best work.

Lucy's mother has just died forcing her to live with her closest relatives. her aunt irene and cousin Angela.

Lucy was told that nothing bad ever happens in her new little town called pine ridge. But that wasn't true. One night a strange power was passed onto Lucy after falling into an open grave. She started having visions, little pictures of terrifying events flooded her head sometimes making her sick. Things have started to get dangerous, someone's watching and there ready to make there move.

I did a book report on this book after reading the whole series and I had to write a paragraph that would draw the reader in and make them interested.

this book is the best i have ever read

Richie has inspired me to write and someday i want to be an author and write these kinds of stories.

and hopfully i will have my first book out by the time i am 14 = P

I love Richie and this book please read it!

Great resource for smart, practical advice on managing a tech career

As a relative newcomer to the technical workforce (specifically game development), this book has been a godsend. I've recommended it to both women and men who are starting off in the industry, as it's one of the better career development books I've come across.

I first read this book over the course of a few days, and often return to reference particular sections as I need them. This book has detailed instructions and advice for individuals in all stages of a tech career, from getting your foot in the door to salary negotiation to starting your own company. It's particularly no-nonsense, and doesn't shy away from insisting that you be able to back up your networking with a strong understanding of your field or discipline. If you're willing to work hard, this book will help you do so in a smart way that lays the groundwork for success in the future.

The personal essays included from contributors across the industry are wonderful. I didn't follow a "traditional" career path into tech and sometimes feel like an outsider to the industry. The impressive women who contributed to this book have a variety of backgrounds, interests, and experiences, and you'll likely find a mirror of your own experience in one of theirs.

Originally, I borrowed this book from the library; but, only a few chapters in I knew I needed to own it. Tarah's advice is direct, applicable and honest, and the sections by other women in tech paint a broad picture of the working life for women across the industry. As someone transitioning into the tech industry, I anticipate this book will be a go-to reference for many years. Thank you Tarah and contributors!

Good for any gender at any stage of your career

I've been in tech for over two decades, and I recognize that not all people of today have come into the same industry as I did, or by the same sideways manner - for women or men just starting out, this book has excellent advice on how to understand the world and industry around you. For women or men managing those just starting out, it helps clarify the perceptions that may be coming from you, your team, your company. For me it helped me focus on what I needed to tackle next, to change the world. Not every chapter or piece will resonate with everyone, but everyone will find a nugget or two relevant to where they are, or where they want to be. Good job!
