This manual has done the job thus far. But, it seems to me that Clymer provides more and better pictures that coordinate with the text. The text is understandable and seems easy to follow but it would be better if there were more supplementary photos.

The best book for henna art...

I read several books about henna when I got started practicing the art, and the absolute best I've found is Loretta Roome's.
No other books describes all aspects of the art of mehndi better; the book details the spiritual side of the art, as well as its meaning, its practice throughout the ages, today's sublime twists on the art, and how to get started with your own creative skin art practices. Roome incorporates all her own artwork and henna prints into the book which are absolutely beautiful and are enough cause to buy the book simply on the talent and artistic endeavor displayed alone.
This book also lists several companies to contact for a henna supply. Color Trends (now Earthhues) is one I have contacted for my supply of henna. They give the best quality of henna powder I've found.
If you've discovered a growing interest for henna since hearing about it fashion magazines or from seeing Madonna's video for her song "Frozen," this is the book to begin your research into this mystic and creative art force.

An Extensive History and How-to

I enjoyed this book immensely. I most liked the depth with which she explains symbolism in mehndi and the history of its application in Egypt, Morroco, UAE, and Pakistan, as well as India and several other countries. If you are looking for a design book, this is not for you. Of course one of the points she stresses is that using a design book is not nearly as rewarding as building on traditional designs and your own unique personality to create a design as original as your fingerprint. She does include several beautiful photographs, but the collection is by no means nearly as extensive as many in other books on this site. I agree with one of the previous reviewers that it is a bit new agy, but at least it recognizes the importance of the spiritual aspect of mehndi, which is forgotten by many American fans of this artform who ignorantly refer to it as simply a cool, trendy way to do temporary tattoos. The recipes and application instructions are excellent. The section tying mehndi to eroticism contains some very interesting information that i have seen overlooked in other books. The resource guide in the back is EXCELLENT and invaluable for anyone for whom the supplies to do mehndi are not readily available. Most of all I enjoyed how this book informs you of the religious signifigance of mehndi without compelling you to adhere to the traditional designs; rather it encourages you to make the art your own and explore your own culture and creativity.

A great book for anybody, not just henna artists!

I love this book, it has become my 'henna bible'! It has all the info needed to become a professional at this lovely art, and it also covers spiritual and modern aspects. I have read it cover to cover 4 times! I just keep coming back for more! Ms. Roome is clearly an excellent artist and teacher, as shown by her eloquent writing and beautiful photographs. This book was my first and most helpful book on the lovely art of mehndi. It is the only book I recomend to others wanting to learn more! :-)

a good read

I'm not much into comic books, but when I saw one about the worgen in Warcraft, which are my favorite race, I decided to get it. The art in the book is very well done. The artists did a great job making the worgen look cool and capturing the dark look of Gilneas. The story is pretty decent, too. It explores the events in Gilneas before the cataclysm and how the curse was created by the Night Elves. My only complaint is that the main character is kind of a dork, but it does not ruin the story. Overall, I liked this comic book.

The best general book about control engineering

I had to use this book for my last semester in electrical engineering. It is really interesting, well explained and complete for a concise introduction about control engineering and design of controllers.

All you need to follow the text are basic notions in engineer's mathematics (a bit of calculus and algebra). A few chapters offer reviews of important notions (transfert functions, state variable modeling, differential equations, ...) Then, you get to the essential, control theory.

The book is well divided. First chapters cover mathematical notions you have to master in order to succeed in the next part (signal flow diagrams, block diagrams, a bit of mechanic). Then, a few chapters introduce control loops, poles and zeros interpretation (explained very well with a lot of graphs examples). A single chapter covers root loci drawing. Great explanations about controllers are complete and easy to understand. The last chapter is kept for design only with A LOT of examples for PID, phase-lag, filters, etc.

Emphasis is made on computer design with examples all along the book. The CD included offers a few useful tools to use for design with Matlab.

The author knows his subject more than anyone else. He has good experience in design and the text is well written. A must for anyone studying the subject.

Poorly Put Together

Using this textbook is a painful endeavor.

The fundamentals you need to learn the subject matter are found in appendices...fine, where are they? They can be found on a separate disc!

The book has MATLAB sections. Great! That's something the intended users of this textbook need to learn, or are already familiar with. Oh...it's not actually using the tools and functions of MATLAB, it's using the author's own software that they wrote for MATLAB.

When presenting concepts in this book, introductory examples quickly devolve into subscript-laden monstrosities in which upper and lower case versions of the same letter are used. Which would be alright (mathematical rigor and all), if then the following examples (when they exist) used actual numbers.

To be fair, there are some "number" examples scattered here and there. But the authors, within such examples, will ask the question on one page, that references a diagram from 5 pages earlier, and liberally skips steps so that you cannot follow their logic. Want to check some of the answers to any questions? Load up your appendices disc and be wowed when questions #1 and #2 are answered (just answers, no work) out of problem sets of 30-60 for a chapter.

The index is bad as well. In short, you're going to need something to supplement this if you're unfortunate enough to be assigned this textbook.

About the Author
