Grade 4-6-From the very first chapter of this exciting story by Donna Jo Napoli (Dutton, 2001), listeners will be hooked. Eleven-year-old Jackie and her father are on a driving tour of Italy when her dad suffers a fatal heart attack. He manages to stop the car on the side of the road before he passes out. Jackie tries to get help, and finally two Italian men stop and take her into their car. Instead of taking her to the police, they drive her to a cottage in the Italian countryside where she is forced to stay. None of these individuals speak English, and Jackie doesn't speak Italian. A woman feeds and cares for Jackie. Jackie doesn't understand why they won't let her go to the police and get home to her mother. She finally realizes that she has been brought there as a replacement for the woman's dead daughter. Julie Dretzin does a wonderful job of narrating this suspenseful story told from Jackie's point of view. Sound quality is excellent. For school and public libraries.

Three Days by: Donna Jo Napoli is a great book.I would reccemend this book to anyone who likes adventure and suspence.I like the way she describes how the problems are solved and how the setting of the book looks like and every tenee tiny detail of what is happening to Jackie in the book.I think that anyone who reads this book will think the same thing about the book.

This book Three Days by Donna Jo Napoli is a breath taker.
It shows you how your life could change enormously in 1 second.
Three Days is a story but it seems like a true account and as you
can tell it is an adventure book. In this book you can never know
what is going to happen next.
Three Days is a very strong book. There are so many
strengths. This is one of the reasons that I recommend Three Days.
This story is about an 11 year old girl named Jackie Holt who
went to Italy with her father. One night they were driving to their
hotel when all the sudden Jackie's dad collapses. I think this is
the strongest point in the book. Jackie gets scared. Jackie's dad
pulls the car to the side of the highway. The car still going fast
bounces over the rough ground. Jackie tries to get cars to stop
in every way she can think of. Then two Italian men picked her up
but instead of going to the police they took her to their home. She
meets a nice woman whose actions comfort Jackie.
Donna Jo Napoli did an excellent job on writing this book
and I hope to read more books that she has written.
I recommend this book because it has no weaknesses and
it is a great book. This book is for readers age 9-15. When you read
Three Days it is one of those books that gives you a tingle and
keeps your interest from beginning to end.

Three Days of Thrilling Suspense

A thrilling story of eleven year old Jackie who is travelling on a business tour of Itally with her father. Her father suddenly has a fatal heart attack and she finds herself stranded on the side of the road, with the realization that her father is dead and she is all alone in a foreign country, with no one to help her. At last a car with two Italian men, a father and son, stop. They take her into their car and leave her father which she doesn't understand. They throw her passport into the river and take her to a house in a remote area of the country. At the house an Italian woman takes care of Jackie. No one at the house speaks English and Jackie doesn't speak Italian. Although desperate and determined to escape Jackie finds herself feeling compassion for her kidnappers.
This is a thrilling book that will keep you in suspense until the very end!

Not a one-size-fits-all program

The introductory chapters to the book contain an interesting overview of grief in general and offer many valuable insights to those suffering from any kind of loss. However, the actual recovery program, presented as a series of exercises, is founded on two bases which may not be suitable for everyone.

1) You're pretty much expected to work with a partner. The authors take pains to say you don't HAVE to work with a partner, but then each new exercise begins with an invitation to "reconsider" your choice to work without a partner and to "examine your reasons" for choosing to work alone. For people who have turned to books because they lack any other kind of support network, this constant prodding can be uncomfortable and may even serve to add to their feelings of loneliness.

2) The program is designed to help you move past your regrets and/or bring closure to any "unfinished business" that remains since the loss occurred. The primary tools are timelines/charts and communication (written and - if you're working with a partner - verbal). Because unresolved issues do tend to trap many people in their grief, this program would no doubt be of great use to many people. However, there are other sides to grief, issues which may not necessarily have their roots in "unfinished business", and there doesn't seem to be much acknowledgement of those other issues in this book.

Basically, if you're trapped in a cycle of "if only" and it's preventing you from dealing with your grief, this book will probably help you. But if you're at peace with the past and are simply struggling to cope with the future in the face of your loss, this may not be the book for you.

Keep an Open Mind

I read this book a few years ago, while I was in the midst of an unraveling relationship. I was coping with that loss and a very difficult year and dealing with 20 years of unresolved grief from my father's death when I was six. At the time, I had taken baby steps toward healing by finally opening up to my friends and loved ones, but I was having a great deal of difficulty moving on. I decided to take a course on Death and Dying as part of my degree program, and this book was required reading. Not only did I have to read it, I had to do all the exercises and share them with people in the course.

I hated every single minute of it--mostly because, I think, I wasn't altogether ready to rip off the scabs from years of suffering. I was also never an open person, so it felt trite and intrusive. Despite that feeling, I gave it my all. I rolled my eyes a lot and complained a lot. I didn't think it helped at all. Shortly thereafter, my Mama got terminally ill. I had to basically give up my life to take care of her. I found myself face-to-face with so much grief in such a short amount of time that I didn't know how to even breathe. But I realized that I was able to face the grief this time because of the work I'd done with this book. After my Mama passed away, I used the techniques in the book to deal with these new pains. And I've since tried to do these things for every unresolved event/painful relationship in my life.

This book is not miraculous, but it does give you a method of doing the work you need to do. For me, no matter what grief it is, the key is to acknowledge it exists. That's what this book does. It provides a gate to fully acknowledging the pain in your life--sometimes, the pain is connected to other pain and you're unaware of it. It's a first step, and it will not "fix" you. Only you can do that, and you can take these tools and make them work for you. For the critics who say it focuses on divorce and death too much--I disagree. The technique is really what's valuable here--not the circumstance. I found it helpful to just skip to the techniques instead of reading the commentary. The technique can be built upon and interpreted differently, but it will help shed light on different things. It's true that nothing is one size fits all. You have to be willing to work--and willing to fall down multiple times. I recommend this technique as one part of a strategy of coping. Another part would be building support networks for yourself, seeking alternate ways of expressing yourself, and (of course) therapy.

It's been seven years since my Mama died, and I am still dealing with the losses in my life on a daily basis. But they no longer eat away at me, and I can face them with a certainty that I will survive them. You will never be the same, but you can face your life and learn to carry your burdens with grace.

Releasing pain and moving forward without letting go of our loved ones

One very simple truth is brought forth in this powerful little book. Bluntly, the majority of our society does not know how or even want to deal with the negative ("bad") feelings which are the natural response to loss.

We've been trained that "boys don't cry", "have a cookie and you'll feel better", "forget the past", in other words stuff the feelings that make other people uncomfortable. Or as a good friend of mine use to do, compartmentalize: put everything in boxes in your mind and put them on a shelf in the back so you don't have to deal with them and they don't have to bother anyone else.

Unfortunately, emotional pain can be like an infection in your body. It may be scabbed over, but it's going to keep festering until you do what is necessary to heal it. Some people respond to the built up, festering pain by actually becoming physically ill. Some people grab an uzi and head to the mall. Then some people become angry, bitter people who turn to alcohol and/or drugs to numb the lifetime of unresolved pain. Either way the outcome isn't good for that person or the people around him/her.

This book helps the reader to understand these concepts clearly and simply. Then it gives you tools to finally heal. If you have lost a loved one to death, rest assured that the goal is NOT for you to bury them again, by trying to make you let go of your relationship with that person. It IS about expressing the pain caused by the loss and letting go of only that pain so that you can remember your loved one with a smile instead of a knife in the heart.

After my husband passed away, I worked with a grief recovery coach who trained at the Grief Recovery Institute with the authors of this book and founders of the institute. I highly recommend working with a grief coach when going through this book. If you cannot afford one, then find someone that you can trust to objectively and compassionately hear you through this process, maybe from a support group, or your church. Aside from the benefits of my coach's training and personal experience, I found working with someone kept me from procrastinating and helped me to push through the pain.

Just remember, the only way out of the pain is through it.

WOW-very hot!

I am just now reading Lori Fosters older books since I am new to her books!This one was very hot and romantic...You watch 2 people who cant stand each other based on their opinions of each other-but they come to find out how wrong they were about each other-and it took a dog bite to do it lol- You watch them fall in love and you cant help but wish this book didnt have to end!...you laugh and smile....this is a perfect 10+ ! A very romantic fun and hot read...This book has been out a while but I am writing this for Loris new fans who havent picked this one up yet-GO BUY THIS ONE! You will love it!You will be left with a smile on your face just as you would with any of her books!

Well. I am so obviously not Lori Foster's reader.

It started with page 1 and the heroine's name: Lace. Big groan. This is a name you'll find only on a stripper or a romance heroine. Yes, I know Lacey is a real name, but even the Baby Name Wizard doesn't list "Lace". Okay, that's minor, and common to a lot of romances. Anyone know why that is? Drives me nuts.

The niggles just kept adding up. You don't have a "hoard" of friends. If someone's your "erstwhile" slave, it doesn't mean they're your devoted slave--it means they used to be your slave. And a secluded cabin doesn't "allot" privacy. Sheesh. Just use simpler words, if you're not sure of the meanings.

Except for the name, I only noticed those things because the book itself irritated me so much. Lace is a radio sex therapist, who's bitten in the butt by a dog, and at the ER, the doc who stitches her up is none other than Dr. Daniel Sawyers, the brother of her best friend, with whom she has a mutual lust/disapproval thing going on.

She thinks he's a stick-in-the-mud; he thinks she's a slut. Oh, and a "liberal." Ooooh. And she's a bad influence on his baby sister, who's now dressing like a girl and dating. (Lace & baby sis are both 27.) But they're y'know, hot for each other anyway.

Now Lace needs somebody to help her out, what with the pain in her butt (sorry--I couldn't resist), so Dr. Dan decides to stay over. Since baby sis is busy shopping. Why this would make her unable to help her friend out for a couple of days is beyond me.

The proximity gets too much for Dr. Dan, so he comes up with the brilliant idea of pretending he's sexually dysfunctional so Lace won't be able to resist fixing him. And golly gee, is there anyone out there who didn't figure out by page 3 that Lace is a virgin? Is there a sex therapist heroine in all of Romancelandia who's ever had sex? I think it's in the job description.

The rest of the book is just standard, cliched stuff. The aw[...] perfect Christmas presents, the clearing up of misunderstandings, the sex scenes. It's tempting to say it's just an older book, but 1999 isn't all that old.

Fantastic.

I don't know why, but i've had this book on my shelf for ages (years) & the 2 follow-on stories, (Annie & Max's) without getting round to read them. I have just finished the private eye & men to the rescue series & thought i'll read the Sawyer series of books.

And did I miss a real treat. This book is fantastic. You can't get a better couple than Lace & Daniel. They are so full of misconceptions about each other. They don't like each other very much. It takes their family & friends to put them right. Daniel is outwardly reserved, but get him on his own & he is hot! Lace is very flamboyant, who loves colours, talks about sex as if she has personal experience of it. When in fact all she knows is what she has learned from books.

A fantastic read.

a sweet read

I have enjoyed this series so much the letters that were on Facebook and are enclosed at the back of the book kept the interest going for this book it feels like it has taken ages for it to arrive.
This story is controversial due to the age difference between the 2 leads personally age is just a number but when emily sets her sights on crabby she is very young too young for anything to happen and is the baby of the MC they all want to protect her and some view the relationship that develops as not acceptable this story is about people's perception of their relationship and how that perception is altererd and how the relationship changes and developed I really enjoyed emily's coming of age book . Whilst there are moments of dark and dangerous in this book this does not overpower the general storyline.

Absolutely freaking loved it!!

It seems like I have been waiting forever for Crabby and Apple Pies book, and its everything I was hoping for. I went through so many emotions reading this. I went from happy, to sad, to happy, then crying to happy again. I'm so in love with these two, I absolutely love their story. The letters and visit chapters were such a plus and I loved reading them.
The Devil's Comfort books have some of the best characters that I've read about. Each one of them own a little piece of my heart and I love Brairs writing. If you haven't read these books you really should, they hold the best stories. Thank you Brair for bringing these characters stories to us and congratulation on another great book!

His international experience also includes projects related to SCADA/EMS, tailored energy markets and grids integration to UCTE/ETNSO pool. He pioneered the studies and applications of the “Transmission Network Automatic Voltage Regulation and Wide Area Protection Systems”. On renewable energy, he has a long experience of studies and field applications of special control systems in photovoltaic, wind and fuel cells generators and power stations. Member of: CIGRE, IEEE-PES and CEI WGs and SCs. Member of IREP Board of Directors and IET-GTD; IJRET Editorial Boards. Author of more than 100 technical papers in the main Conferences Proceedings and Reviews on power system stability, control and protection. Born in Newark and schooled in his father's Jersey City bar, NICK TOSCHES, a contributing editor of "Vanity Fair", is the author of the acclaimed biographies "The Devil and Sonny Liston, Dino, Power on Earth", and" Hellfire". Disappointing Biography

At times I found Nick Tosches' prose practically unreadable and incomprehensible. Every other sentence [used much profanity]. This is hard to believe in spite of Dean Martin's decline during the 1970/1980s. Tosches makes too many assumptions about Martin and the author's reputation as a "stylish" writer is ludicrous. Unless one is a diehard Dean Martin fan, I do not recommend this book unless you want to learn how NOT to write a biography.

Not a Particularly Good Biography

I don't want a biographer to be in love with his subject, but I also don't want a biographer who basically seems to dislike his subject either. I am looking for balance and insight from a biographer.

Nick Torsches does not exactly dislike Dean Martin (Torsches definitely dislikes Jerry Lewis), but Torsches does seem more interested in exploring "the Dirty Business of Dreams" than he is in exploring the man, Dean Martin.

Torsches makes it clear that Dean Martin was a hard person for anyone to really get to know--whether it be Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra, or his wife of many years, Jeannie. Dean played it "cool" in real life, just like he did on stage and screen.

But it is pretty apparent that Nick Torsches either was not granted access to many of the folks who knew Dean Martin, socially or otherwise. Or he was not interested in such access. I suspect that the former was the case.

About two-thirds of Torsches' biography deals with Dean Martin's time with Jerry Lewis. I was not, and I suspect that most people who pick up this biography, will not be especially interested in that part of Dean's life and career. We are more interested in what Dean did after splitting up with Jerry Lewis. That later part of Dean's life feels hurried and skimmed, even though it represents the bulk of his total career.

Over and over in the book, during the Dean/Jerry years and after, people who work with Dean (both men and women) are quoted as saying that Dean Martin was a joy to work with. Not only was he easy-going, he was also helpful, supportive, and he had excellent acting instincts. But never once in the book does Torsches ever provide anecdotes to exemplify those remarks. It is as if Torsches cannot be bothered with such trivial testimonials--they don't serve his larger purpose of exposing the hypocrisy and venality of Hollywood and show business in general.

But throughout Torsches's highlighting of the dirty side of Tinseltown and the Vegas Strip, and Dean's role in it, it is clear that Dean was always in the periphery of this nastiness, never in the middle of it--like Frank Sinatra clearly was.

Dean Martin was part owner in a number casinos and night clubs with undesirable characters. But Torsches seems to make it pretty clear that Dean was strictly interested in the profit to be had in these ventures, not in the back room dealings. Torsches also shows that while Dean was not especially good with money early on in his career, that he became very shrewd about money later on--both in negotiating his contracts and in investing his proceeds.

Torsches is cynical about everything--from show business, to politics, to relations between people. It fairly drips off of almost every page in the book. But it is an adolescent, superficial cnynicism--"everybody is a phony, nobody is dealing straight". We're talking about Hollywood and and the night-club scene, is this really a new and important revelation?

Finally, Torsches does do a good job of showing what can become of a person who has forever played it cool, and never allowed anyone to get close to him. The lonliness and erratic behavior Dean exhibited in his latter years is well described and sad to read. But ultimately, the morality tale that Torsches appears to be trying to write is too superficial to be convincing, mainly because Torsches does such a poor job of really bringing Dean Martin into three dimensional life.

An honest look

As someone who is originally from the Steubenville, OH area, I can tell you that there are a lot of old guys back home who don't like Mr. Tosches very much. His extensive research and willingness to nonchalantly describe certain families' criminal endeavors were not well received. His book, however, is a well-written bio of one of the more compelling personalities in American entertainment.

As a fairly young guy, I only knew Dean Martin as an aging Rat Packer. Tosches does a good job of describing Dino's roots and the enigmatic manner in which he formed relationships. The pace of the book works well, taking you smoothly from his humble beginnings to his ascent into celebrity and his eventual death.

I didn't really find any problems with the research or conclusions drawn. I've read different accounts of the relationship between Dino and Jerry Lewis and how that ended, and it's hard to discern exactly what happened. Nonetheless, Tosches appears to make an honest attempt to tell the story (though maybe from Martin's perspective).

If you're a fan of Dino and the Rat Pack, this is an informative must read. Note that the book doesn't digress too much into the lives of other Rat Packers. This is a book about Dino, and the others all take a backseat.

Would recommend for anyone looking to learn Accounting!!

The book itself arrived in perfect condition even though I bought it used and I love everything about it. The content is very easy to understand and the book does a good hob of explaining new content. I learn way more from this book than I do from my professor and her notes because the book provides SEVERAL examples to ensure that the reader understands the concepts. There are review sections at the end of every chapter along with several practice problems. My only complaint is how long the seller took to send me this book. I received a good three weeks after I ordered it.
