Short and to the point.

I got this book after I saw the trailer and naturally expected something different then what I ended up getting. It's a great read, short and to the point. If you're getting this because of the movie, then you might want to know it's about only one character, namely Bruce Willis' and there's not really an ounce of humor in the whole thing.The art is crisp, the fight scenes brutal and the storytelling is swift and on right on the money for a tale like this. It's bleak and gritty like you would expect from Warren Elli, so good news if you want to pick it up because you're a fan of him. I recommend getting it even if it is a bit short, you won't be disappointed.

Don't expect the movie to be the same

This is a great comic book. If you saw the movie and want to read the comic, be aware, this comic tells a story slightly similar to the movie but amazingly different in its structure. You have the ex-CIA being chased and its vendetta against the company, that's all.
The tale told here is amazing, is a story about a man that had only one purpose when active and after the retirement wanted to be left alone, that's all. You understand his morals, his trainning and his mind. It's more about the psychological state of someone that killed all his life than the killings or the vendetta.
It is a great comic book, amazing writing and drawing, and something that should be read by everyone who's interested in comics.
But it's not the movie, not at all.

Fast and Furious

This one grabs you by the lapels. There is relatively little exposition here, just straight story. And the action? It his hurled at you in a visually arresting way, with hard and fast pacing. And boy, it is almost shockingly violent (this one is not for the kiddies). It will be interesting to see how they expand the relatively sparse story for the upcoming Bruce Willis - Helen Mirren - Morgan Freeman film.

Georg Simmel (1858–1918) taught at the University of Berlin and, later, at the University of Strasbourg. Please, will somebody tell me what this means?

This book has a beautiful picture of Georg Simmel on the front cover,and the back cover has blurbs by very famous people (Horkheimer, Park, Habermas). But they say how great Simmel is, not how good the book is.

I could not figure out what Simmel was trying to say. If someone told me Simmel was parodying the Germanic idealist literary tradition of the time, I would be prepared to believe it. Here is one sentence chosen at random (p. 63): "The inorganic body is distinguished from the living one above all by this: the form that defines it is determined from outside... The organic body, however, produces its form from within."

Well, I do declare! That is really deep and insightful. If you are about eight years old. The whole book reminded me of the movie "Being There" in which Peter Sellers is mentally retarded but everyone takes his pithy statements seriously because he dresses impeccably and has a perfect upper class British accent.

Perhaps some reader will tell me what this book is really all about.

About the Author

Dan Silber is a game developer who has been credited for Pixel Art on dozens of games with licenses, including Marvel, Nickelodeon, Pixar, and Disney. His work has appeared on games that span multiple platforms including PC, Nintendo DS, and GBA. In addition to working with Pixel Art, he is a programmer, musician, and accomplished 3D Artist―with work that has appeared in an exhibit in the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum. Dan owns the game development studio Interstellar Tortoise and has written several indie games.

Wonderfully illustrated, it covers many different aspects of pixel ...

This is a book i wish i had 10 years ago. I know that for myself and many other gamedevs i know, art skills are very difficult to master. Silber teaches pixel art with an exact, technical manner that my computer-esque mind can understand and put into practice. Wonderfully illustrated, it covers many different aspects of pixel art - really just about anything you would need. Characters, backgrounds, animations, color palettes, and software are all discussed in a straightforward way. Having never dealt very much with pixel art in the games I work on, I'm now taking a second look at the form, especially after the great arguments Silber gives in favor of it.

Good, But A Bit Pricey

Great book, with lots of good information, and the author has a good background in Pixel Art. However, the price seems a bit too steep for the size and information this book contains. It is, however, really the only book of it's kind.

I wish the interviews were a bit more in-depth, and not so short, especially since they were artists for some very well known, beautiful games. The book could have also been a lot more hands-on.

A practical guide for pixel art creation

Silber cuts a lot of the fat from other art books by giving practical advice for pixel artists to use. This is a cheat sheet for many of the common problems in pixel art that most books overlook (what tools do I use, how should I approach palettes, how do I blend between pixels, etc). Fundamentals in perspective, color theory and design are detailed in the text as an introduction for further study.

Much of the content is structured to walk the reader through the creation of in-game assets, rather than a single portrait or illustration. For the developer, this book gives insight into how to create an effective pipeline for video game art that is efficient and aesthetically appealing. While the diagrams in the book are not astounding, it provides the tools for analysis to study other artists (Paul Robertson, Joakim Sandberg, etc).

In the end, this is a book every game developer and pixel artist should have in their library. It gives practical, down-to-earth advice for efficient game development.

This is a fascinating book that we were all proud to publish. It "de-sensationalizes" multiple personality disorder for the reader and explains it clearly through a very compelling and emotionally charged case. Though now eight years old, THE FLOCK continues to sells very well.

One of the aspects that struck most of us when we first read it was that healthy people develop separate personalities on a moderate level: a "work" personality, a "spouse/lover" personality, a "son/daughter" personality, a "parent" personality, and many more. But healthy people don't completely dissassociate because they aren't protecting their souls from the intense kind of suffering experienced by a victim of sexual abuse.

The best books teach us as much about ourselves as the subjects about which they were written.

Very sensitive to DID...

I found this book to be comforting in a way that only people with DID/MPD can understand. Of course no one wants anyone to suffer with such an illness, however when you also suffer from the illness a book with this much sensitivity and courage is amazing. The author never needed to go into graphic detail of her abuse, that made this book safe for me. Her story gave me hope in my journey to recovery. I reccomend this book!!!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it is like to live with MPD. It's believeable and very well written. Many books on MPD are sensational, and extremely graffic. The emphasis is on the abuse events and patterns. This book is about the real life struggle of living with and recieving therapy for MPD. It is written in first person by a Multiple and her therapist. Both parties describe the difficulty in living with and treating MPD very accurately.
It's a book you can reccomend to your friends that won't give them nightmares, but will certainly cause them to think and to learn.

Co-Dependence, Anyone?

This one's a little different. First, it is written not by the core personality, but by one of her alters. Secondly, the therapist's own notes are interjected through out in an attempt to show you both sides of the story. The main difference, however, comes from the style of therapy Casey and Wilson engage in: serious re-parenting. Personally, it went to such an extreme that I thought it was unhealthy. Yes, I want to trust my own therapist, but I fail to see how becoming a frequent visitor in his house and treating him like a pseudo-father figure would benefit either of us. Boundaries are very, very flimsy here, nearly to the point of co-dependence.
That said, The Flock is a decent read. The story is involving, even if completely impossible for any multiple I know to identify with. No one I know will ever receive such therapy. In fact, I'm not sure that they should.

This book concerns the relationship between urban planning (and similar things) on the one hand, and war, natural disaster and societal or political disintegration on the other. My supposition is that one may mitigate the other. The book recounts the author's professional experience of specific cases of disaster (earthquake and flood) in the Philippines, war in Bosnia, Afghanistan and South Sudan, and disintegration in Albania and Ireland. I identify the key themes in urban and regional planning which these case studies illustrate. The themes include: the delivery of building land with site preparation, infrastructure and property rights; the size and amount of plots able to match both demographic projections and wealth distribution; the creation of a property market able to deliver affordable land and buildings to match demand, encourage investment and further the development of the economy; the spatial or geographic adjustment of institutional patterns to reflect the components of identity - making for 'fuzzy' sovereignty; and a form of organisation which leads to effective project management and implementation, and so on. The view is taken that lack of suitable development land supply, a land market unable to deliver affordable property to the people and unable to support economic growth, and a spatial-institutional pattern unable to match key aspects of identity, are all causes of war as well as societal or political decline. The book contains many drawings prepared by the author, including plans of urban projects described in the text. It may be of interest particularly to architects, town planners, municipal engineers and civil engineers, urban administrators, urban economists, politicians, diplomats, soldiers, and staff of NGOs and international agencies.

About the Author
John Yarwood graduated in architecture from the University of Edinburgh and in urban planning from the University of Sheffield. His doctoral thesis concerned the history of Islamic urbanism. After an early career in local government, he was for five years head of the architects' department of Telford New Town Development Corporation. After two years as Head of Urban Renewal in Bahrain, he worked as a consultant in Turkey, the Philippines, Kuwait, Jamaica, Dubai, Germany, Finland, Britain, Russia, Poland, China, Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sudan, Afghanistan and Albania. He worked for the E.U, E.C, World Bank, etc. Subsequently he worked as an academic at University College Dublin. He was awarded an MBE in 1997 after his work in Bosnia. He is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He used to be a Quaker. He is married to an ex- children's psychiatric social worker, who is now a counsellor to refugees and torture victims. They have three grown-up children.
