A weak effort

I'm extremely disappointed with this work by the respected GM Ftacnik. It seems to me that he put in very little effort, and having previously purchased the excellent books by Avrukh on 1.d4 (Vol.1 & 2) as well as his two-volume coverage of the Grunfeld Defence, I expected better from this "addition" to the 'Grandmaster Repertoire' series.

I'm an International Master, who is looking to take up the Najdorf again after a long break from playing it. Unfortunately, Ftacnik mostly just resorts to saying things like: "this move has been played the most, but you could also play this line". In my view, this is simply his way of avoiding the hard work that is needed to give accurate opinions on complex positions, that need to hold up to scrutiny. Avrukh does this in his work, Ftacnik - it seems to me - does not.

A far less professional-looking book such as 'The Sharpest Sicilian' by Georgiev & Kolev actually does what this doesn't. It delves into positions and explains the key strategic elements. This is what leads to strong play in an opening. Memorization of key lines is critical, of course. And especially in an opening as sharp as the Najdorf. However, everyone knows that you don't remember things well unless you understand them. A work that has rightly received critical praise is the two-volume treatment of the Hedgehog, by GM Shipov. Now there's a book written with the right combination of knowledge and passion, that leaves the reader with not just a knowledge of the right move order, but also with a great understanding of WHY it is so.

In my view, this is a complete waste of money for any 2200+ player, and I would not recommend it for u-2200's either.

Great for a Club Player! Highly Recommended.

I'm rated USCF 1750 and this book is perfect for me. It contains a great deal of analysis, along with excellent explanations of "what is going on". I find that the explanations are enough at my level, to enhance my understanding and learning of the variations.

I feel that the main variations are presented, but the author refrains from giving countless variations that would be more then I could learn from. I also like that in a few lines, he presents the Black player a choice of variations, which was helpful to me as I had already investigated some of those lines.

Should not be part of the Grandmaster Reportoire series...

Am I missing something or did GM Ftacnik forget to write about the Grand Prix attack with an early 2.f4 !?
I searched the table of contents only to be confused by the author's cute names for certain variations - "Some Like it Hot" for the Morra Gambit for instance. Next, I moved on to the Variation Index at the back of the book same result, 2.f4 is not to be found.
Lastly, I started reading chapter one titled "Pandora's (Chess) Box - Miscellaneous 2nd moves" - not even a mention of the possiblity of 2.f4. In my opinion this is not acceptable for a book classified as a Grandmaster Repertoire to omit certain well known moves for White on move 2! If I were to compare Ftacnik work on the Sicilian to Marin's on the English (3 vol. set by the way), Ftacnick might be accused of rushing this book out way too early to the publishers. Ftacnik in fact warns the reader in the introduction - "My own modest expertise lies in the domains of the Najdorf and Scheveningen systems, which I have been playing and studying over the past two decades. The Scheveningen system represents a kind of foundational core, from which virtually all knowledge about thematic Sicilian structures and plans can be races. Although the official subject of this book is the Najdorf variation, the two systems share many common themes and can often transpose to one another." Great but nothing about 2.f4?

On the other hand, I found some of the lines provided by the author original and well thought out. I have used the recommended 2.d5 and early g7 line against the 2.c3 setup to good effect in tournament games. I will warn the reader, the ideas of the lines presented are not well explained. Instead the author writes something like - " This leads to sharper play and is often used by players who are looking to win with the black pieces."
Ok I get you, you are not an expert in Dragon, Kan, Taimanov or Sveshnikov Siclians. But not to include a Najdorf/Scheveningen solution to the 2.f4 move played form the days of Phillidor and La Bourdannais (1700s) is a shame. I'm not claiming it is difficult to meet 2.f4, but simply this should have been mentioned in a Grandmaster Reportoire book. Because if it isn't then, this is not a complete reportoire book on the Sicilian. Perhaps Quality Chess needs to hire another Grandmaster to write about the Sicilian. Oh wait, Quality Chess is in fact publishing a new Siclian book later this year with 440 pages on the Sveshnikov.

Perfect Rx for a Troubled Relationship

I never thought that reading a book would save my marriage, but Conversation is Sexy did just that. I found a copy of it in my soon-to-be ex wife's car, read it from cover to cover, followed Coach Todd's advice, and won back the love of my life! Next month instead of heading to divorce court, we are planning to renew our vows. Whether your relationship is in trouble like mine was, or you just need to rev things up and get out of a rut, Coach Todd will lead the way.

Just, WOW!!! My boyfriend of 6 years heard about this book from a close friend who raved about it and is a professional who studied relationships from one of the best learning institutions in the nation...so he knew there had to be truth behind the content of this and decided to give it to me for Christmas. I have already read it and he just finished taking his turn...we were enamored with the amazing feedback in this VERY well written, honest approach to help couples spice up their relationship through communication. As a professional mediator of family relations, I have not only begun to use the lessons learned in my romantic relationship, but also have a new outlook on how to improve my career. As in previous volumes an inventory of relevant unpublished manuscripts held at the Niels Bohr Archive constitutes an appendix to the whole volume.

Incident Response aims to teach you how to determine when an attack has occurred or is underway--they're often hard to spot--and show you what to do about it. Authors Kevin Mandia and Chris Prosise favor a tools- and procedures-centric approach to the subject, thereby distinguishing this book from others that catalog particular attacks and methods for dealing with each one. The approach is more generic, and therefore better suited to dealing with newly emerging attack techniques.

Anti-attack procedures are presented with the goal of identifying, apprehending, and successfully prosecuting attackers. The advice on carefully preserving volatile information, such as the list of processes active at the time of an attack, is easy to follow. There are several good books related to the forensic area.
However, only this book, covers multiple platforms scenarios: Windows, UNIX and Nonplatform-specific technologies are thoroughly discussed. As a bonus, some ORIGINAL attacks (not found elsewhere) are explained and documented (e.g., 'Stateless TCP Covert Channels').
You can try this book whichever is your level in this area.
The main themes are covered both, in introductory chapters, and in more advanced ones.
If you are looking for advice about specific tools, or 'response toolkits'. . . again this is your book, hundreds of references, and several 'typical toolkits' are included.
Chapter 16, 'Investigating Hacker Tools' is a winner discussing the issue of how files are compiled (and the related analysis techniques).
Chapters 13 (Investigating Routers), 14 (Investigating Web Attacks), and 15 (Investigating Application Servers), are extremely useful, and really help to make unique this book.
I own two copies, one to be used at home, and one as a reference for my students. It is a very worthy book, and at the Amazon price, it is a real bargain.

The rule about pulling the plug to preserve the evidence is history. The authors explain the importance of getting a snapshot of system dynamics. For example, who is logged in to the machine, what ports are open, what is going on.
Real world information is provided. Any security professional or forensic investigator who hasn't read this book is out of date

In this audio CD presentation you get two narrators who cover the story line. There is Jacqueline Pearce, who played Servalan character in the TV series, and the second narrator Paul Darrow, who played Avon in the TV series. What you get in this lovely box set is 6 CD discs. For those who are new to Blake 7, the TV series lasted some 4 seasons. For me the series represented a `grand space Opera' where a small group of rebels, their space ship the Liberator, a craft that is both powerful and fast. The rebels move from one planetary system to another - on their way they are fighting the tyranny of the autocratic Federation. Their arch enemies and constant pursuers are Supreme Commander Servalan and her lieutenant, Space Commander Travis. In this narrative the Federation have launched upon a plan that cannot fail. Their aims are simple - to capture the Liberator and destroy the rebel leader Blake and his rebel crew. The sound production and other musical accompaniments are done to high standard; this is a classic Blake 7 tale that for me brings back real reminiscences very good Sci-Fi drama. Highly recommended.

If you are a fan of Blake's 7, you will need to get this cd set. Jacqueline Pearce (Servalan) reads three episodes of the original series and it is certainly worth the price to hear her voice and talent.
