An Excellent Resource for Practicing Teachers

It seems that a lot of books in the market on testing deal with the theoretical background of designing large scale tests on the institutional level. Those sorts of books are not so useful for the practicing teacher who is looking for a little guidance on improving their test writing skills for daily classes. This book is written with that teacher in mind. It doesn't overload the reader with loads of statistics, but if you are interested in the statistical basis of the ideas presented in this book, there is a section on statistics in the appendix.

Basically, this book is divided into three sections. The first section covers the different types of test a teacher might want to give and the differences between those types. The second part delves into the theory of validity and realiability, but doesn't overwhelm the reader with loads of numbers and figures. The third part goes into how to test different skills. The attitude the author takes toward testing is that a test should focus on one of the four basic skills: speaking, reading, writing, or listening. Grammar and vocabulary, he claims, are not ends in themselves, but merely components of the four basic skills, so they don't need to be given much emphasis in testing. I thought that was an interesting idea.

If you're a teacher looking for a book to help you with your test writing skills, I can recommend this one.

TESOL

The book is excellent for the "pure" language teacher with a TESOL background (not Education) and is attempting to design assessments for likeminded practitioners in the field. If this is your setting I think that this book will be ideal for you.

Hughes is also aware that these tests, and tests in general, need to be taken with a dose of salt. I am finding this book hard to review as I have 15 years now in the field. So here it goes:

If you are new to TESOL/ESL it may well be a 5

Language Schools and Colleges with TESOL Departments it is a 5: even if for discussion

A veteran teacher looking for ideas and a bit of testing theory a solid 4 and perhaps a 5

A implicit oriented testing advocate whom does not believe in teaching discrete points a 1 - 3

About the Author

Morten Tolstrup is the Director of TE Wireless Group, International Service & Solutions. Prior to working for LGC/ADC/TE he spent 13 years in a number of different engineering positions with a mobile operator in Denmark, mainly focusing on indoor RF planning, tunnels, Airports, Pico-cells and micro cells. Over the past 15 years Morten has presented more than 50 papers and workshops at conferences around the world.

Exactly as the authors says: Not for scientists

We all know there's no avoiding the complex math behind the engineering; it serves a purpose right? But if you want to get a real 'hands-on', practical and with very well simple graphics and visuals in the world of DAS and Indoor systems, this is the book for you. The author is very humble yet to the point, making a very effective transition between the complicated to the "making sense". Moreover, having been in the world of CDMA and CDMA2000 and EVDO for years now, the initial topics on GSM, UMTS are a big plus, especially with LTE here now to stay! This book is well worth the price. Any DAS or In building RF Eng needs this one as part of his/her shelf resources.

Covers all the bases

This is a great book that I would highly recommend to any DAS engineer. As the other reviewer mentioned, it is written with an engineer in mind, not a scientist. Any office that works on these type of systems would be well served by having a copy of this book. I like that it starts at square one with basic repeater driven systems and evolves to cover advanced designs like elevator shafts and subway tunnels. This makes it of value to the new guy on the team as well as the seasoned veteran.

One of the best and most visionary writers of our age

I first encountered Loren Eiseley's The Immense Journey by accident in a university's library stacks. I took it down from the shelf and, after glancing at the table of contents, started to read one of the essays. Three hours later I realized that I was still standing in the same place and had read through almost half the book. I had never encountered writing like this before. Eiseley writes about nature with the eyes of a haunted poet who sees the natural world slipping away even as we view it. It is hard to convey to one who hasn't read any of this just what makes his writing so special. He is a master of language. His 'take' on what he observes in nature is original and fresh. The structure of his essays, like arguments in the form of stories, progressing from some general observation to an unexpected conclusion - please and surprise the reader.
Each of his essays is, at one and the same time, a lesson, a sermon, a lyrical poem, a travelogue through time and space, a prayer and a great imaginative leap beyond human skin, culture, time and place.
These essays deserve to have a much broader audience than they have enjoyed. This is simply some of the best and most original writing that has been done in our century.

Beautiful, introspective, and poetical

This is a wonderful book. Loren Eisley is an anthropologist who writes like John Donne.
I went to the University of Pennsylvania in the 1960s when Loren Eisley was Professor of Anthropology. He was then recognized as the finest writer at Penn. Though his field was anthropology, every semester he was a guest lecturer for the English department in their Creative Writing classes.
Each chapter starts with a theme from nature, archeology, or biology. Gradually his writing turns from scientific observation to philosophical musing, poetry, and introspection. A perfect example is his chapter called "The Dream Animal."
In "The Dream Animal" Eisley starts by pondering a genuine problem in evolutionary biology - the remarkably short period
of time (approx. 500,000 years ago to 150,000 years ago) during which the brain evolved from the size of an apes to modern man. He ends with this -
"The story of Eden is a greater allegory than man has ever guessed. For it was truly man who, walking memoryless through bars of sunlight and shade in the morning of the world, sat down and passed a wondering hand over a heavy forehead. Time and darkness, knowledge of good and evil, have walked with him ever since...a new world of terror and loneliness appears to have been created in the soul of man.
For the first time in four billion years a living creature had contemplated himself and heard with a sudden unaccountable loneliness, the whisper of the wind in the night reeds. Perhaps he knew, there in the grass by the chill waters, that he had before him an immense journey. Perhaps that same foreboding still troubles the hearts of those who walk out of a crowded room and stare with relief in to the abyss of space so long as there is a star to be seen twinkling across those miles of emptiness."

This is a very unusual book. It is ostensibly about the "Immense Journey" of man along his long evolutionary trail. But, in the same way that "The Odyssey" is not just an historical travel tale, Eiseley's book is much more. This is a work about the wonders of life, the joys of curiosity, the rewards from solitary time spent in the natural world and the transitory nature of all existence.
This one must have been just fantastic when it was published in 1957. It's still very good in 2003 despite the passage of time, which has exposed several of Eiseley's scientific beliefs and musings to be erroneous. Keep in mind the tremendous advancements in archeology, molecular biology and all other fields of science over the last 46 years and don't get hung up on these anachronisms. Instead, revel in the beautiful language Eiseley uses and the imagery he evokes: "Some lands are flat and grass-covered, and smile so evenly up at the sun that they seem forever youthful, untouched by man or time." Or another favorite: "Tyrannosaurs, enormous bipedal caricatures of men, would stalk mindlessly across the sites of future cities and go their slow way down into the dark of geologic time."
Read this book and you'll want to dig up fossils, listen to the wind, watch other animals and soak up life. And you will probably want to read it again.

Excel as taught from the business perspective

I like the viewpoint of this book; I have a business problem, now how do I attack that in Excel? So many books come at business problems from the perspective of a specific feature in the product. This book teaches the solution to a complex business data analysis problem through use of the features in Excel. Excellent!

It's a small book. The text is a little terse, but that's ok. Screenshots are used sparingly.

If what you want is a feature by feature breakdown of Excel then this book isn't for you. But if what you have is some data that you need to crunch and you don't know much about Excel then check this book out.

Exactly what I was looking for!!

As a strategy analyst I'm always looking for concise ways to present data and make it automated and professional-looking without lots of code that none of my clients can use.

I agree with the previous reviewer, other books come at Excel and similar applications with a feature by feature breakdown so that in usage YOU have to work backwards to figure out how to apply software features to your problem.

This book is organized by business problem and then proceeds to breakdown how your problem applies to the software solution. There is very useful code in some of the models, but nothing horribly difficult to implement.

Excellent addition to my reference library. I've truly never seen a business data analysis book as well put together as this and I've been searching for years. You will not be disappointed.

Great Book, but where's the data?

Overall this is a good book, but it would be much nicer if they provided Excel worksheets with the data used in the book's examples. Some sample code is provided for dowload on Oreilly's website, but this does not include example data. Nonetheless, the book is worth looking at.

Hassan's career in software engineering spans both industry and academia, and he develops concurrent, distributed, and real-time applications in industry; designs software development methods and applies them to real-world problems; and teaches short courses to professional software engineers around the world. He has a B.Sc. in electrical engineering from University College, London, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Imperial College, London.

Good Resource for Architecting Software Product Lines

This book brings together a good range of concepts for understanding software product lines and provides an organized method for developing product lines using object-oriented techniques with the UML. The text also includes a good selection of examples and case studies to illustrate the product line approach. I found this book to be well-balanced with respect to the needs of both experienced and novice software engineers.

Excellent UML for PLE Coverage

This book is great for the UML syntax. The author does a great job of putting together a UML profile for Product Line Engineering modeling, and has great examples on how to use it.

But if you decide to read it beware that it excludes many of the Architectural practices that are found in the other resources. It does not use Attribute Driven Design, Cost-Benefit Analysis, or Architectural Tradeoff Analysis.

If you get it, keep that in mind. It is only good for an artifact creation reference, not the process behind arriving at the artifacts.

I would definitely recommend it for the UML profile it has and the examples the author provides.

UML for software products, maybe lines too?

It's still unclear to me how the software product lines in this book are distinguished simply from the products themselves. There is more emphasis on reuse and this appears to be the key distinguishing characteristic. But even with the book just focusing on a singly product this is a valuable work showing the use of techniques of Object Oriented Analysis and Design using UML. The book is a solid piece of work (both physically and in content), though there is a bias towards illustrations as opposed to explanatory text. Software architects should evaluate the book in person. Front line software engineers probably won't find much they can apply to their work.
